Jealousy

"Ugh, why did he have to do that in front of everyone? In front of me?" Oliver thought to himself as he stormed down the hallway.

More specifically, as he stormed down the hallway away from the cafeteria, where his brother had just tried to confess to Sara Lin mere seconds ago. Of course he had done it right in the middle of the cafeteria when the girl was in tears and stressed enough. Why was he so angry about it, though?

Why did he even care in the first place...?

"Oliver, wait, I'm sorry!" He heard a voice call as footsteps hurried toward him.

Only when his wrist is grabbed from behind him does he look to see the redheaded girl standing there, tears still flowing from her eyes without him realizing similar ones were pricking at his as a blush formed.

She jammed her eyes shut and her head tilted down as Oliver clutched his fist in the girl's grip with her quickly spitting out her words, "I-I'm so sorry you keep getting dragged into stuff, but I really need you!"

He's quiet for a moment and listens to her hold back sobs once more, and seeing her so upset brought somewhat of an unfamiliar and unexplainable ache to his chest. After a few moments staying like that he pulls his wrist out of her hand, making her look up even more sadly until his face softens. Bringing in a careful finger, he wipes a tear from her face and pulls her into him, hugging her gently.

This surprised the girl, but once that settled she let her arms wrap around his waist with her hands resting just below his shoulder blades as he muttered from above her, "I'm sorry. That was the last thing I should've done when you were already upset. I don't know why I freaked out like that."

She stays silent until Oliver leans away, taking her wrist with a loose grip and leading her to an empty classroom. He sits her down at one of the desks, grabbing a box of tissues from the front of the room and placing it in front of her. Joining her, he sits down at the desk beside her and observes as she wipes her face of tears, calming down slightly.

"Joe's never been the most..." He hesitates, "observant..."

"Yeah, not the best timing," Sara murmurs back as she pulls a tissue from her eyes.

Oliver gives a frustrated sigh, "I wish he would just pay attention, he was facing you when he walked over, he would have seen that you were crying if he weren't so wrapped up in his dramatic slow-motion strut."

"I guess he just didn't notice," the ginger suggested in an attempt to defend him.

"Yeah, he never seems to notice when other people are unhappy," the boy fires without thinking with a roll of his eyes.

This caught Sara off guard, while Oliver immediately realized what he just said, his eyes widening as he now grows upset with himself instead, "geez, what's wrong with me? He didn't mean any harm. He's a good guy and he didn't mean to do anything to upset you and just noticed too late."

These words seemed to be more intended to reassure himself than Sara, him resting a hand in his hair with his elbow on the desk and eyes closed.

"Is... There something you need to talk about?" The girl asked cautiously as though she was defusing a bomb.

Really, it was almost like she had even forgotten she was upset in the first place.

"No." He says immediately, "it's fine, everything's fine."

She raises an eyebrow, "it doesn't seem like everything's fine."

"All it is is that everyone always prefers my cooler, nicer, more attractive, perfect older brother, it doesn't matter," He says in irritation.

"W-Well-" she starts, not knowing exactly what to say until he opens his eyes and looks at her, annoyed, "that includes you, Sara Lin."

He sighs and crosses his arms, "sorry, this isn't what you need right now, let's just talk about fixing your grades."

"Oliver, it sounds like you've had this bottled up for a while, are you sure this isn't something you need to get out?"

"It's fine," he says firmly, though she refuses to drop it, "it sounds like... I don't know, like you're jealous of him, or something..."

He goes silent. That didn't sound wrong. It didn't FEEL wrong. But he didn't really even like people, why on earth would he be jealous of everyone constantly loving and cooing over him?

"That includes you, Sara Lin."

The sentence replays in his mind like a broken record, on repeat until something clicks into place. He was jealous that Joe was getting her attention.

"Can we please just talk about tutoring?" He sighs, really, really not wanting to have to address this at the moment.

She sighs back, knowing she wouldn't get anywhere if he wasn't willing to talk.

For a moment she watches his face, seeing slight traces of sadness and frustration in his eyes until she gives a small grateful smile, "yeah, okay."

"Thank you for being willing to help. Even after, uh, well, everything," she says sheepishly once the two finish making a plan a few minutes later, scratching the back of her head with an awkward smile.

"It's my job," he gives a slight smile back, though on the inside that constant ache still refused to leave.

It was his job. That's what he needed to worry about. Helping her, and prioritizing her grades. That's all he needed to focus on when it came to the girl. Because for now, all he could do was sit in silence and watch things happen.

At least for the boy, it was a nice view.

A/N

Hey y'all!
That ending feels so unsatisfying omlllll but yk not all of them can always be happy endings! Honestly, it's basically canon Oliver right now so it's nice that one of my stories finally feels lowkey a little more accurate to the canon characters since they're usually pretty inaccurate imo. The part where Sara runs and catches up to him is actually based on a SUPER old alternate-timeline scene photoshop I had made if Sara were to have gone after Oliver instead of to the stairs! I won't be showing the pictures unless there's demand for it, lol, too much cringe factor for me since they're old and crappy heh-

This is for @Eclipse_Latino!!! I meant to write this SO long ago but I feel soooo bad that I had forgotten this, but I finally managed to get it out, and I'm pretty happy with how it came out!

Anyway, I hope y'all liked this one, please leave any ideas, prompts, thoughts, or constructive criticism in the comments, I love hearing your feedback!
