Scarf

They were friends, and they knew they were.

But at the same time, both of them desperately hoped the other matched their wishes to be more. Sometimes it just felt like if they got just that tiny bit closer, crossed that tiny invisible line they walked so finely on, they wouldn't be able to hold the words back anymore, they'd ask what had been nagging at them for so long. Sara Lin always found her mind wandering regardless of where she was or who she was with, wandering off to that familiar question, "where do we really stand?"

The two watched as the snow gently flittered through the sky, glittering with the beams of the fluorescent bulbs of the street lights passing through them, surprised it was snowing in November. Neither of them wanted to say it, but they both knew Sara needed to leave soon. A peaceful silence surrounded them as the shimmering layer of frost on the grass became a sheet of snow thinly covering the green just beyond the glass of the door in front of them. Sara sighed, the cold of the outside air clinging to the glass, leaking inside a small bit, her breath coming out as a fog. This grabbed Oliver's attention as he turned to look at her.

She looked back at him sadly and said quietly, "you know I have to leave...."

He looked back down at his feet, "I know....."

"Hey," she smiled a bit, nudging his arm with her elbow, making him look back at her, "you know I'll see you tomorrow, we can walk to school together if you want?"

He smiled back, "sounds good to me," then sighing, "I guess you need to go now."

"Yeah, I guess so..."

"At least take a scarf, I don't want you to get sick out there," he said, grabbing a scarf out of his bag that he had lazily slung over his shoulder.

She shook her head, laughing a bit, "I think I'll be okay, it's not that far of a walk. Besides, you'll probably need it more."

"I'm not the one going outside into the snow."

"Oh is that so?"

"Yes it is, Sara Lin," Oliver replied.

He then spoke again, a mischievous smirk growing on his face, "take it," and before Sara could know what was happening she had the scarf wrapped around her waist, the blond boy holding the ends gripped in his hands.

A deep pink color spread across her face, "O-Oliver!"

"What?" He grinned slyly, giving a tiny tug to the ends of the scarf, making her stumble an inch or so forward, though a reasonable distance was still between them.

She blushed furiously, "you know what, Subway Boy!"

His face took on a slight red tint at the nickname though he still had an evil look on his face as he spoke with sarcasm, "well you're sure making a real effort to get out."

Sara huffed, crossing her arms and biting the inside of her cheek, trying to figure out what to do. Looking around, pretending to be completely innocent, he then pulled on the ends of the scarf, but unknowingly did it too hard, making the girl trip over her feet, letting out a small squeak of surprise as she stumbled toward him.

Oliver quickly dropped the scarf, letting it fall to the floor as he caught her by her arms, so close that she was only inches away from leaning her body against his. She stared up at each him, and he stared down at her in his arms.

"I guess you literally fell for me, huh..." He murmured without realizing it, looking down to her lips before grasping the face that he had just said what he did, eyes widening and face glowing red.

Sara's blush only deepened hearing him as she stood there in his arms, just that little bit too close. Though unintentional, they had finally crossed that invisible line they always walked so finely on.

As they looked at each others wide eyes, they couldn't take it any more, and just moments before the redheaded girl would have, Oliver quickly blurted out the words that had been echoing in his head for so long with a deep red covering his face, "Sara, what are we?"

She glanced away from him, not knowing what to say, soon enough looking back to him with the same hue across her cheeks, "I-I don't know, I've wanted to ask you the same thing for a while....."

"What are we supposed to be?"

"I don't know that either," Sara spoke in a near whisper, tearing her eyes away from him.

"I don't think we're friends."

She turned her gaze back up to him in confusion as she looked at his half lidded eyes that were staring down to her lips before he began muttering again, only just barely audible to her, "people who are only friends don't do this. Can I kiss you?"

Without a verbal response, to shocked to speak, she nodded shakily, barely able to process everything. With confirmation from her, he moved one hand from her arm to her face, pausing for a moment to run his thumb over her cheek, savoring the moment before Sara couldn't handle the suspense anymore and made the move herself. Leaning towards him slowly, as if going any faster would make her wake up from the dream she felt she was in, he began moving as well. After a moment, their lips met in a soft kiss, and when she didn't wake up, Sara smiled through it and could feel Oliver doing the same.

When they pulled back, the taller boy was the first to speak still quiet though smiling now, "what are we now?"

She chuckled a bit at that, "I still don't know, that's a conversation we've gotta have when we have more time," and albeit reluctantly, she stepped out of his arms, "right now I still need to go home."

Knowing that if she didn't leave now then she never would, she began stepping towards the door before glancing at him again with a smile, "tomorrow morning? On our way to school?"

He smiled softly, "yeah, sure."

As she began to step out the door, Oliver looked back down to the floor, then called, "wait, Sara!"

Picking up the discarded scarf from the floor, he jogged over to the door where she had turned, waiting, then as he carefully draped it around her neck, "I still don't want you to get sick."

"Thanks," she smiled, "I'll see you tomorrow then."

"Right. Tomorrow," he sighed happily to himself as the door shut and he watched her through the glass, Sara turning to give one last blushing wave which he returned right back to her.
