The air was heavy with anticipation, lust, and hope. It was prom week, the final countdown until the juniors and seniors would have the nights of their lives. Five days. All the girls had their dresses, the guys had their suits. However, only a few had their dates, leaving the atmosphere thick with anxiousness, people hopefully waiting for their turn to ask or be asked. As the days went by, people were deciding to simply go with friends or getting their nerve up to ask their crush.
Sara Lin herself was hoping that someone would ask her. Who she hoped it would be, she didn't know, but Sara being the romantic she is, just wanted to go with a boy. She knew she would be going with Patrick, Oliver, Joe and Vicky, the last two going together formally. After the night at the school festival, her and Patrick had decided it would be better to pretend the kiss just didn't happen. After all, their friendship was the most valuable thing to both of them, and they knew that things would only be awkward if they stayed aware of it.
It had been decided that when the night came they would all meet at the Yang's apartment out of convenience since the majority either lived there or very close by, with Sara only just across the hall and Patrick around the corner.
As lunch came round, with Sara being the only one at the table, she found herself daydreaming about a promposal directed to her, however with one key detail missing: the person asking. She was snapped out of her thoughts by a lunch tray being set down across from her at the table, a person close behind sitting into the seat aligning with the tray. She focused her attention to the masculine figure sitting across from her, the blond hair on his head never failing to catch her attention.
She smiled and spoke up, reciting the same sentence she said every day, "Oliver! What's up? How's your day going?"
Her attention and caring about how he was feeling never failed to make Oliver's usually-stoic appearance soften, as he looked into her orange-brown eyes and answered, "Okay, better now that I'm here with you."
He had never said anything like that before, and upon hearing his words, she looked back at him as a slight blush rose to her face, "aw, Oliver! I could say the same!"
For a few minutes with no one having showed up to the table yet, as usual seeing as the others always show a few minutes later than the two, Oliver and Sara proceeded to chat about little things, mostly music like every other day they were together. They had begun sitting at lunch together outside of the Newspaper Club table the day following the school festival, the night that they had really begun to understand each other as people.
Sara had brought up the one topic that was on everyone's minds into their conversation, "so are you excited for the prom this Friday? I can't wait!"
Oliver found himself grinning at the girls excitement as he responded, "kinda, dances aren't usually my thing, I'm mostly going because all of you guys are. I probably won't dance, I uh.... don't dance in front of people."
"Aw come on Oliver, it's prom, you've gotta dance! That's part of the fun, especially if you've got a partner when the slow songs come on," the girl giggled, then speaking up again, "are you going with a date or anything?"
He blushed, and stated, slightly embarrassed, "no, but there's someone I want to go with, I just don't know how or when I should ask her or anything..."
She looked at him, eyes shining with excitement, "really?? Who is she?! Wait, no, I'll wait to find out, but tell me how it goes! You just gotta ask her, you never know if she'll say yes if you don't try."
He then made his attempt to take some of the heat off of him, "Well what about you, Sara Lin? Any lucky guy that you're going with?"
"No, not yet, no one's asked me, but I hope someone does, I think it'd be cool to have a real date! For prom last year me and Patrick just went as friends and it was a great time and all, but it'd be nice to actually go with someone, y'know?" She replied in a hopeful yet calm and casual tone, to which the other replied, "yeah, that's understandable."
