I sat in school, fidgeting with the small box in my hand. The bell rang and reki stood up, grabbing his bag. I got choked up and glanced at him.
Nevermind. We've got tomorrow or the day after that.
I put the box in my bag quickly and stood up, following him outside. "Man, I didn't get chocolate from anyone." He shoved his hands in his pockets and looked at his feet as he walked. My chest got all clenched up and I glanced to the side. "Maybe next year." He looked at me and smiled. I felt myself blushing and I looked forward.
I reached to my back and pulled the box out of my bag. "Here." I said and gave it to him. Reki looked at me and smiled softly. "Thanks man, but you should keep this, I'm sure a girl gave this to you for a reason." He handed it back and I stared at his hand. "Uh, no. Nobody gave me that." I said quietly and rubbed my neck. "Oh, well thank you. Ya know you're the first person to give me chocolate, Atleast for Valentine's." He opened it and ate a piece, looking around.
I watched him and smiled to myself. "I think it's cute how girls give these away for their crushes and stuff and it's not as cute when you don't get any." He laughed softly and I smiled shyly. "Did you make this? It's good." "Yeah." I breathed out and he glared at me. "This is why you blew me off last night? Cmon I had to hang out with Miya." He handed me them. "Forget it. I don't want them." He chuckled and held the box to his chest.
"Thanks Langa." His tone completely changed and I nodded. He stopped walking and wrapped his arms around the back of my neck, hugging me tightly. My face heated up and he squeezed me, shaking me from side to side. "Youre the best, man." He patted my back lightly and our noses bumped as he pulled back. "I'll see you tonight!" He waved and hurried home.
Rekis pov:
I stepped inside and slowly took my shoes off, staring at the red box in my hand. My mom walked in and smiled. "Ohh who's that from?" I smiled to myself and rubbed the back of my neck, sliding a bit on my shoes as I walked over to her. "I remember when I gave my first crush one of those, gosh it was terrifying." I blushed and little and looked up at her. "But my friend gave it to me." "Well maybe she likes you." I froze and set it on the counter. "Do only girls give those out?" She nodded and opened the fridge.
"For the most part, I'm sure there's some boys but its just a silly tradition." I sat down at the kitchen island and poked at the box. "What are you thinking about?" She asked and set some noodles on the counter, grabbing a pot. I breathed in sharply and sat up. "What am I supposed to say? Like if they like me. I thought we were just friends."
She smiled to me and shook her head. "Oh Reki, if you really didn't like them, you wouldn't still be thinking about this." She glanced over her shoulder and turned the stove on. "Why don't you go talk to him." I covered my face and pulled my headband over my eyes. "Mom, it's not a boy."
She rubbed my back and I pressed my eyes, seeing little colorful particles. I let out a breath and wanted to throw up. "Well the box has langas name on it, so I'm assuming it's from him." I grabbed it and walked into my room. "I love you!" She yelled down the hall and I collapsed on my bed, biting at the inside of my mouth. "Langa..." I said quietly and tapped my foot.
I waited outside my window and saw Langa climb over the fence. "Hey, are you coming? Where's your board?" He whispered and hunched down as he walked towards me. I looked up and huddled in my jacket. "I- uh...hey man, that chocolate today. It didn't mean anything, right?" I asked and scratched my head. "Oh." He breathed out and rubbed the back of his neck.
"Why? Would you not like that? I mean- not that I meant it as anything." He had a nervous look on his face and I smiled subconsciously. "No, no. I mean it's fine if it was. I was just wondering." He nodded and his breath turned to a cloud infront of him. "Are you cold?" I asked and stood up, leaned against my windowsill. "Wait- I want to uh talk to you."
I nodded and grabbed his wrist. "You can just come inside, you look cold." I pulled him inside and unzipped my jacket. I shut my window quietly and pulled my shoes off. "I did mean it- yknow- in that way." He said as he sat down on my bed and I glanced over my shoulder. "Oh oh- ok. Yeah cool, man. That's cool." I smiled and he scratched his head, falling back on my bed. "Did- well did you like them?" He asked and I watched him carefully. "Yeah, they were good."
I closed my blinds and handed Langa a blanket. He sat up and wrapped it over his shoulders. "We're probably going to be late." He said and I pushed the hair behind his ear. "Yeah, probably." He looked up at me and I made eye contact with him. My focus bounced between his eyes and lips and my finger rests on the side of his side. I hesitated but slowly moved down.
He held his breath and closed his eyes. I paused maybe two inches over his lips and squeezed my eyes shut. I let go of him and stood up, covering my face. "God this is so wrong." I sat down next to him and groaned, laying down. "I thought I'd just try but i- I can't...Dude, it just feels so weird." I looked at him and dropped my hands on my stomach. He looked back at me with sad eyes.
"Yeah, it's okay. We can just stay friends." He gave a half hearted smile and held my hand, rubbing my palm with his thumb in a comforting way. He laid and we stayed like that for awhile, sitting in comfortable silence. "Maybe you just need to figure yourself out. It took me time. Lots of time." I glanced at him and squeezed his hand. "Alright, don't give up on me now, okay?" I smiled and turned on my side. He shrugged and smiled back at me. "I don't know man, that's a lot to ask."
I smacked his chest and let go of his hand. "Shut up." I curled up at his side and I felt so warm inside. He put an arm around me and slowly rubbed my side. "Langa, I don't know what I am but I like this." I whispered and he chuckled, snuggling closer to me. "Yeah, this is nice."
I woke up the next morning in Langas arms and heard knocking at my door. "Reki, get up, we have to go to grandmas." I looked at Langa and shook his awake. "Get up." I said between clenched teeth and he curled to the side. "Mh." He groaned and I pulled him up. "Langa. Get out." I threw his shoes at him and opened my window. He stumbled over and I pushed him through. "Hey wait." He rubbed his eyes and leaned through the window. "C'mere." He grabbed my shirt and kissed my cheek.
I blushed and looked at him with wide eyes. "I'll wait for you." He smiled softly and then hurried through my yard, climbing over the fence and disappearing from my view. I smiled and slowly shut the window. I opened my door and my mom looked at me.
"God you're a mess." She wiped at my cheek and I pushed her away. "Mom stop it, I'll get ready." I pushed passed her and she smiled to herself. "Reki." I pointed at her cheek and I glanced in the mirror, seeing a light kiss mark on my cheek. I rubbed at it and walked into the bathroom. Does Langa wear lipstick?
