I skated alongside Langa and steadied myself on the bumpy ground. I stopped for a moment to get a sip of water and saw Langa fly forward off his board. At first I thought he was laughing, like we usually do after we fall, so I laughed softly as I walked up to him. But the closer I got I realized he was crying. Well crying is an understatement.
He was freaking out, I could tell but he was trying to not look like an idiot. I kneeled down and moved his skateboard out from under his leg. "Hey, hey. What's wrong?" I said softly and put my hand lightly on the back of his head. He sat up slowly and held his arm tight against his stomach. I tried to hold the hand of what I thought was a broken arm and he winced, looking down.
I rubbed his back and pulled my phone out, calling my mom. She picked us up a few minutes later and drove us to the hospital. I sat in the back with Langa, trying to comfort him. I had my arm around him and he was sitting there quiet, maybe even a little numb to what was going on. "Are you alright?" I whispered and he nodded slowly, resting his head on my shoulder.
"It's not that bad..the whole healing process, it's just real itchy." I said trying to make him feel better and he just closed his eyes, reaching for my hand that I had on his shoulder. He squeezed it and I smiled softly. We got to the hospital and we were out in the white, small room that reeked of cleaning supplies. Langa laid down, I could tell he was exhausted, and just completely spent. I pulled the chair next to the table and put my head on the noisy paper.
Langa moved his hand onto the top of my head and lightly played with my hair. I looked at him and he looked back, with tired eyes. "I broke my ankle when I lived in Canada." He said quietly and I listened to him. "We were snowboarding down this steep hill, it was the first time I went down one without my dad and I hit a rock that was barely poking out from under the snow." He cleared his throat and lightly scratched my head. "I remember my dad carrying me to the car and-"
The door opened and the nurse walked in with a few things in her hand. I picked my head up and fixed my hair, leaving langas hand dangling over the edge. "I'm gonna go talk to my mom." I said quietly and Langa nodded. I walked out into the lobby and my mom was on the phone, a little more fidgety than normal. "He's alright, he's just tired." I said and she nodded, continuing to talk on the phone.
I waited for the nurse to walk out and Langa followed quietly, a thick cast on his arm. I walked up to him and fixed his hair for him. "Your moms coming to pick you up." I said and he stared at me. "Thank you." He wrapped his arms around me and I stood still before placing a hand on his back. Langas not much of a hugger so this was really weird. Nice but definitely weird. Now that I think about it, Langa doesn't really like physical touch, Atleast not when we're around other people. But I'm gonna let it slide since he had such an awful day.
We walked him outside and Langa sat down, texting his mom. I sat quietly beside him and put my head on his shoulder. "Do you want to come over tonight?" I whispered with my head down. He nodded and I lightly rubbed his back. "I'll leave my window open." He hummed in agreement and said a soft goodbye before standing up and walking to his moms car. I looked at my mom and we made our way to the car to drive home.
The drive home was dead silent. "Langa seemed touchy today." She said and I mildly freaked out inside. I stared out the window and bit my nails. "Yeah he had a rough day." Definitely not because we've been secretly dating for a few months. But I kept that last bit to myself. I looked down at my phone and looked at langas texts. Nothing new. I sighed and shut my phone off.
We got home soon after that and I went to my room, wondering if I should call Langa. I hovered over the button and chewed at my lip. I pressed it and put my phone to my ear, hearing the faint ringing. "Hey." He said quietly and I heard a door shut behind him. "Hi, are you feeling alright?" I asked and bit at my thumb nail. "Yeah. Yeah I'm fine." He breathed out and I got all choked up. "I think my mom knows." I said after a few long moments of silence. "I'm sorry, I just really needed to touch you and be near you today-" "No- no. No I understand. It's fine, really. I don't really care if she knows." I interjected and I heard his let out an amused noises.
I could almost see the smile on his face. "I love you." I whispered and he gave a short, soft laugh. "I love you too. I have to go now but I'll be over as soon as my mom goes into work." "Alright." I took my hand away from my mouth and smiled shyly. "Bye." I quickly answered and the line disconnected.
