"The Peruvian Vipertooth is a copper-coloured dragon native to eastern and north-eastern Peru," Florin says, informing them about the last dragon there is, and the only one left to cover.
Isabelle can't really believe it, if she's being honest. This is the last dragon she's ever going to learn about. And then after this, she's pretty much done. After covering this dragon, she just has to study for a couple of exams that she'll have to take, covering these past two years' work, to see what career she'll end up with. And then, if she finally gets an occupation, that's it. She'll officially have a job, and won't do any more studying, or any more schooling.
It's a crazy thought. Exciting, yet almost impossible to wrap her head around.
"Its scales are smooth and copper-coloured with black ridge-markings and short horns on its head," Florin continues. "Like the Norwegian Ridgeback, its fangs are venomous. It's the smallest and fastest known breed of dragon, about fifteen feet or five metres long and able to conceal itself well from Muggles."
They're in Peru at the moment, of course, just having taken a Portkey from their huts on the Hebrides to the northern Andes in Peru. Isabelle looks all around as Florin speaks, while listening intently to everything he's saying, checking out the landscape. It's quite a warm place, although it does look like it's going to rain fairly soon, and the nine of them are standing at the base of a mountain at the moment.
Isabelle has a feeling there'll be a lot of hiking up and down these mountains over the next few months. Her feet instantly ache at the thought.
"The Vipertooth feeds mainly on goats and cows, but is notorious for its particular craving for humans."
Isabelle's wandering eyes snap back to Florin, widening. Oh, great. Just what they want. To find a dragon that craves the taste of their flesh. Perfect.
"In the late nineteenth century, Vipertooth numbers once went on an alarming increase and became a serious threat to wizards and Muggles alike," Florin continues, Isabelle's eyes now following him as he paces back and forth. "The International Confederation of Wizards was forced to send an extermination squad in to reduce the Vipertooth population."
Isabelle winces slightly before she can help it. Charlie notices and grabs her hand gently, which she doesn't necessarily need, but is grateful for all the same. She squeezes it in return.
"The Dragonologist Harvey Ridgebit was the first person to catch a Peruvian Vipertooth," Florin goes on. "And fun fact: the disease Dragon Pox was originally contracted by wizards working closely with Peruvian Vipertooths, before becoming a widespread wizarding disease."
Isabelle nods her head. She's heard that fun fact before, although she wouldn't necessarily call it 'fun.'
"Now," Florin says, ceasing his pacing and clasping his hands together, "as I'm sure you've all already guessed, when these dragons aren't attempting to devour an easy human, they're mainly nestled up in these mountains, only flying down to feed on goats and cows when they become hungry. Therefore, and I'm sorry to say it, but we'll be hiking and camping once again, following along these mountains and tracking as we go, until we see a Vipertooth."
Isabelle can't help but feel exhausted and lazy as soon as Florin says that, but Charlie squeezes her hand and she shakes her head, snapping herself out of it. This is a once in a lifetime experience. She's actually having the chance to explore the Andes with some of her closest friends, and potentially see a wild Peruvian Vipertooth! So what if she has to walk a few kilometres to do so?
"So," Florin continues, grinning around at them all, "time to set up camp here. We'll put up our tents and whatnot, and get everything sorted the rest of this afternoon, before we start hiking up this mountain here tonight."
