Courtney's POV
I love telling people 'I told you so' but in this situation, I can't bring myself to say it. There is something too tragic about her to make a joke out of this situation. Even Chris isn't saying anything. I should not have left her. I should have stayed."Maria, come back to earth, won't you? Everything will be okay."
No it won't. She's so getting pregnant! He's so leaving her with the responsibility of raising this child alone!
"Three towns no pill. Gio would say this is a sign from above. It looks like I'll have this baby."
Yep!
"Dude, don't say that. You won't have his baby!"
"I'm going to sit in the car. Excuse me."
I gave her a moment. "Nothing?" I asked Chris.
"Not yet."
"People in this town must love babies not to have that pill in stock!"
"They are little towns. They have to grow somehow. Besides, values count for something."
"What does that mean?"
"They believe in family. They believe in some conservative things like sex after marriage. So why would someone need a pill to stop a pregnancy if it's a new addition to the family?"
"A child borne to two married people. Classic. Do you believe in that Christopher?"
"Yeah. Yeah I do. I think she should have that baby do that she can learn something from this." His response surprised me. For once, Chris and I reading from the same script!
"But we can't tell them that." I whispered.
He got closer. "Of course not!" He rolled his blue eyes.
When we got into the car, no one said anything. It's that grim! It's super ironic if I'm to be asked. People are overjoyed when a baby is born. But why is this not a joyous occasion? A baby is to be conceived! We will throw a party and bring gifts when the child is born so why not start the celebration early?
"I hope it's blanks." I broke the silence hoping to cheer them up.
"What?" She looked at me.
"I hope he's shooting blanks." Chris laughed and so did Nate. Marianna laughed as well. I can carry every burden for her but not this baby. I was not part of their moment of heat. When I was pressing my knees together to keep my lady bits behaved she let him in. Now look at her, scared to be a mom when she engaged in the very act that makes girls mothers!
"You're not the only one Court. You're not the only one." Nate sighed.
"But would it be so bad if it happens? I mean you two will make a cute baby!"
I thought we agreed not to say this and he goes and dies it anyway. But in that regard, he's right. Maria and Nate will make a cute baby. I can't help but wonder what Chris and I will make. I banished the thought out of my mind. Before I consent to lease my womb to a wee bairn, I have ti cross some other things off my bucket list.
"I agree." I smiled at Chris when he looked at me through the rearview mirror.
My lips are still burning. I can still feel his hand around my neck, his breath hot and my favorite... his hot mouth on mine. I don't entirely blame Maria. When a hot man is on top of you tempting and coaxing a surrender, it's easier to give in than say no. If Chris would have kept kissing me like that, something would have happened. Maybe we would be the ones running around looking for a pill.
To think I told my father I'm pregnant. That was the last conversation we had. He must be losing his mind wherever he is. I watched the rain pelting down against the windows of the old jeep. I can see Chris occasionally glancing back at me, his eyes curious about something. I touched my lips. He dragged his fingers through his hair. I want to nestle and pull that hair but something tells me that it will be a struggle for submission between us. Who will be on top?"
