Allegra's POV
"She's going to be fine. The best doctors are taking care of her."As much as Tommy is trying to be supportive, I can't ignore how grim her condition is. The doctor says if she makes it through the night she will be fine.
He took my hand squeezing it gently in his.
There's much more going on than just the gripping paralyzing fear that my mother will die. Not too long ago, just before I met Chris, my father ran off with a girl my age. I just don't understand how you stay married for over twenty years and then you run off with a girl your daughter's age! I don't understand. He took all the money we had saved up. He emptied the bank account and he was gone just like that.
When Mrs St Patrick approached my mom about a possible match with her younger son, I was over the moon. It was not only the possibility of love growing between us but better financial prospects. Marrying up is a big deal to women like me. We not only seek a good husband but s good name. A good name, takes you places.
I was heartbroken that Christopher left me for another. Days after that I was debating against myself whether to confront the woman his chose or to cause trouble until he takes me back. When I found out who she is, I felt challenged. She's the daughter of an Ambassador. I'm the daughter of a foolish man who left his family for a girl half his age! She has the kind of beauty that is haunting, not to be forgotten. Perhaps Chris wanted someone like her not a commoner. Shortly after I accepted that he isn't coming back to me, I found out I was pregnant.
I never told my mother that Christopher is the father. Till now, she doesn't know that. I couldn't come clean because she would confront the St Patricks and start a scandal with a powerful family. Most girls like me who get pregnant by billionaire heirs are paid off. It's either the child becomes a bastard and is entirely disregarded or upon birth, the mother surrenders every right to the man's family. I didn't want either of those options. Christopher would hate me if I was to show up at his family's doorstep announcing an unwanted pregnancy when he's engaged to another. That was the plan. I used to walk to his family's home but I could never bring myself to ring the bell at the gate. I stayed away and I struggled on my own taking care of my mother's health, bills and this pregnancy. I cried often especially when mother would hurt insults at me for ruining my prospects of finding a good man because I was lose and I'm having a fatherless child. I would cry bitterly! My baby is not fatherless. My baby has a father. He's not a nobody but I am and I feel too small to demand that he does something about it. I was not lose. I couldn't resist Chris.
I initiated it and it was out of a shallow impulse to capture his attention. It worked and it was not the attention I wanted. It wasn't his heart that got intrigued. Another woman owned his heart already. It was his body that responded and it became physical before it was ever emotional. I gave in. I wasn't forced. I gave in because it's impossible to resist him.
"Miss Bloom." Tommy tapped me out of my deep thoughts. I stood up quickly. "She is still unconscious but as soon as she wakes, you can see her."
"Thank you."
Tommy went ahead to have a word with him. I decided to take a stroll to at least set my mind at ease. The hospital has a beautiful walkway winding through a garden. I wanted to be a nurse. That dream among my other dreams did not work out.
I chose to sit down when I felt I couldn't go any further. It was on the same bench with a dark haired woman with her head bent. Her long hair is covering most of her face.
"How far along?" I asked her.
She turned to look at me.
It's her!
