Allegra's POV
I haven't heard anything yet.I expected that when I told the Major General about Chris he would act swiftly. I expected to see Chris the very next day. I expected an apology for his behavior. I expected an acceptance for his daughter and I. Nothing has happened so far. Did the Major General confront him? What did Chris say? I'm dying to know.
The Ritz is a wonderful place to stay. Expenses are not a concern. The Major General is laying for it. But it's not home. I dream of something much better for Aubrey. I want what he gave Courtney and her son. I want a beach house too. I want him around just like he's around for her. We both deserve equal portions of his attention if not his deep pockets.
I glanced at my mother.
"Why are you looking at me like that?"
"What are you planning? You're awfully quiet."
I moved away from the window. I sat on the bed with my mom. Aubrey is asleep. She had a fever last night. It's little things like dealing with a sick child alone that frustrate me. Chris should be here with us to spend the sleepless nights with me.
"I was just thinking about Chris. I'm wondering what is taking so long for Chris to respond. I already told his father the truth."
"I know I was pushing for your marriage to Christopher St Patrick. I wanted you to have a comfortable life. But things have changed. He's married-"
"I have his daughter."
"It would have held more weight if it was a boy. We know how much emphasis and attention society puts on male children. I assure you if Aubrey was a boy he would have assumed responsibility a long time ago. You had a good thing with Tommy. Why did you spoil it for this?"
"Because I love Chris. Because it should be Chris. Not Tommy."
"The most you'll get out of Chris is child support my dear. He will hate you for going to his father."
I scoffed. "What other choice did I have? He refused his responsibility. He needs to be reined in!"
"You think his father will do that."
"Yes."
"He's a grown man. He's married. It's not that black and white."
"The Major General will do the right thing. I'm certain." I looked at the door expectantly. If Chris shows up, even better.
"If he doesn't do what I expect, I'll have to sue him."
Christopher's POV
"I'm sorry... I didn't know you were in here. I'll come back later." Court's mom turned away."It's no one's space. We all live here and I think we can share the dining room amicably." I told her. "Have a seat. I need to talk to you about something."
I think Court is more of her father's daughter than she is her mother's. Rayne is a calm person, barely dramatic about things. Sometimes it's hard to figure her out.
"Is everything alright?"
"No. No it's not. I am sure Courtney has told you about Allegra and her daughter... my daughter. I'm in a difficult spot. Your daughter is the reason I can't acknowledge the little girl. I don't want to lose Court. I don't want to upset her. But the more I think about it, the more I realize that what I'm doing isn't right. It doesn't feel right. I need someone who is not my father or mother to give me some guidance. What should I do?"
"It sounds like you're in quite a pickle. Two children from different women isn't something easy to balance. Court is not the type to share you in anyway. To her it's betrayal even if you look at the other child. But neglecting your responsibility when you are responsible for that girl's existence is not right. I think that you should find a balance between your two children when taking precautions not to fall into the trap Allegra is obviously setting for you. The woman doesn't just want you to be Aubrey's father. She wants something for herself too. You have to be careful Chris."
