Every time, I go into the streets and see the city this vacated and ruined, it breaks my heart a little. But I won't let it show. My people depend on me. On my strength and leadership. It wasn't exactly something I wanted, but nobody stepped up to take charge after the Outbreak. We were just a bunch of teenagers back then, and we had no idea how to survive. Most of us were traumatized by the brutality of what we had witnessed. My brother especially. He is still not the same as he once was. No, Alec has changed for good. And not to the better. He is constantly in a state of self-loathing, anger and on the brink of depression.

Despite of that, I know he's right behind me at this moment. He will always have my back. Both figuratively and literally. And when we are hunting in the streets as we are right now, he'll never leave me unguarded. In fact, it's only when we are hunting, that I can see a hint of the old Alec. The sarcastic, salty guy with a snarky comment to any situation. Now, he is the strong, silent, and grumpy guy. But I get it. I understand the change completely. Afterall, he went through a lot more than I did. We both saw a loved one die, but he also saw his best friend, who he was secretly in love with, get bitten by the Anthroes. I couldn't imagine anything worse than knowing someone you love is now a cannibalistic monster. And I think that's why he hunts the way he does. Always on the lookout. The first to respond. The fastest, strongest and bravest of us. All because he's looking for his infected friend. To end his misery.

And then of course there's the whole situation with Sebastian...

My crew of hunters are moving silently from the edge of one building to the other. It's almost nightfall, so we have to be on the lookout, because now is the time where the Anthroes are the deadliest. But it's also the best time to catch one of them. They usually eat at night, which means they are so focused on hunting, that they don't notice, when they are the ones being hunted.

We do kill a lot of them on these hunts, but the main purpose is to capture one or two alive. We need the live specimens to find a cure. It's just a lot more difficult than it sounds. They have some kind of flock mentality that makes it especially hard to separate one from the pack. That's why we usually must kill the entire pack. We don't have the facilities to hold more than two at a time. I need to think of the safety of my people first.

Alec taps my shoulder twice, which means he is ready for me to move around the corner. I move silently with Alec following close by. As I move past a busted doorway, Alec moves inside to check for Anthroes. I stand guard outside until I feel the double tap once more. That room was clear, so we move on. The other team, team Beta, is doing the same thing at the opposite side of the street while the team in the back, team gamma, is making sure we don't get surprised from behind.

A low whistle from the team to my left, lets us know that they have found something. Without removing my eyes from the streets in front of me, I use my left index finger to signal for Alec to join them. He taps my shoulder once to let me know he is following my order. Then he moves towards team Beta to check it out.
