(they/them pronouns used for akaashi)

it was never enough, was it? no matter how hard akaashi tried, their grades kept getting worse. they had set 5 alarms so they could be up for class, put their phone in a different room so they could pay attention to their class, and yet there it was. 5/15.

why? why were they never enough? it's not like they could just quit either, because then they would have to do it all over again next year. akaashi tried to keep their sobs quiet as they sat on the couch, knowing that the person they least wanted to see them like this was sleeping in the next room.

"i'm trying so hard." their words were silent as they pressed their sleeve to their lips and choked another sob. "when will it be enough? all my pain, stress, exhaustion... when does it pay off?"

"i don't know." akaashi looked up with wide eyes as bokuto's soft voice filled the silent room. damnit. the last thing they had wanted was to seem weak.

"i don't know." their boyfriend repeated, coming to sit down beside akaashi and wiping away their tears. he pulled them to his chest. "but i'll be there until it does and even after that. always. because to me, you will always be enough. my beautiful akaashi. you can cry now. i'm not going to judge you. it's ok to cry sometimes. it doesn't make you weak."

with his words, akaashi started crying into their boyfriend's chest. their sobs reverberated in the silent room. bokuto's heart had broken to a million pieces when he woke up to his lover crying silently in the living room, trying not to wake him up. bokuto wanted to show them that he would always be there for them. so, he held akaashi tighter as their sobs became louder and their tears started to wet bokuto's shirt.

after a few more minutes, akaashi's sobs quieted down and bokuto carried them to bed, kissed their forehead and played with their hair until they dozed off. bokuto's eyes landed on the curled up form of akaashi next to him. and in the peaceful glow of the moon, they no longer looked stressed, their expression now relaxed. he smiled as akaashi cuddled closer to him. they felt safe. they always did when they were with him.
