Clanking ride chains overpowered by the screams of terror and excitement from riders, chatter from the people lining up for the next ride as the cicadas buzzing in the background. The smell of popcorn wafts through our nostrils and we look at the side where a small stall was making popcorn.
Eric told me to wait for him as he bought one, we munch on the caramel flavored popcorn while we waited for our turn.
Eyes reflecting the neon colors plastered into the ride's steel bar, the rode reached the pinnacle and stayed there for almost a minute and the memory of going to star city brought me nostalgia.
I was woken up in my stupor with Eric's elbow nudging me, still this time I haven't notice the changes that occurred to him after seeing that it was time to change passengers and for us to enter the small metal carriage.
The wheel shook for a moment and I held into the metal bar, my excitement has also reached its peak when the ride came to life. The carriage was too small for us to be seated together so we stayed facing each other.
In the corner of my eyes, I saw Eric unable to sit still, stiff like a log and his eyes darted everywhere but my enthusiasm for the ride seems to mask my mind.
The wind brush past my face messing with my hair, my body was tilted to the side and then to the other as I relished the feeling of being lifted high into the ground. Eyes shaped into half crescent moon I watched the ride goes higher and higher.
Starry night skies and brilliant city lights made my heart swell. I pointed to each place that was once I look up to and now is the size of an ant's nest.
Cold, sweaty hands make their way into mine, it even tightened when the ride bumps and rattles and I finally had the time to look at him.
"What happened to you? You look pale as if you're scared" I jest but he didn't answer and my mind was easily overtaken when our carriage reached the top.
My eyes fluttered downwards and saw the minuscule people, the feeling of being able to be high up on the ground as if you have achieved flying in the sky and the childish thoughts I buried ignited.
"This is so cool!" I said out loud with a big smile on my face and when it was time for us to get down, I pouted and could only sigh that the time was too short.
It was like the seconds of fireworks as it fly to the sky and bloomed like a flower only to fade away on its own.
"Let's go to the octopus ride next- Oh!"
I almost couldn't stand straight when Eric suddenly tilted to the side and I take his arms to stabilize himself.
"What's wrong with you?" I haven't had the time to know his answer since I was preoccupied with the ride.
He didn't say anything but he was sweating, on this night where the wind was cold enough to make me shiver. My suspicions were even greater when I saw his pale face and stiff body that I urged him to sit down.
Maybe he was anemic and in dire need of sweets so I was about to buy some cotton candy when he pulled my arm.
"What's wrong? I'm going to buy sweets for you to replenish your energy"
"No, I'm... I'm fine" his eyes darted back and forth, he doesn't look her in the eye and it made her feel that something is amiss.
"Tell me, what's wrong with you?" I stoop down and held his face to make him face me.
He bit his lower lip and sigh before telling me the real reason why he's acting like this.
"I'm... I'm afraid of heights"
I immediately understood his previous actions and sigh in frustration though there was something sweet and wark that overflowed in my heart.
"Then why didn't you say so?" I asked softly and he answered.
"Because you wanted to ride it"
His answer just made me realize how lucky I am that he's my boyfriend. Even if he was terrified of heights, he held onto his fear and came to accompany me into this ride and would even accept riding to another one.
That just made me feel that he truly loves me, to be able to put aside his fear and make me happy.
"Thank you"
I pressed a soft kiss on his forehead, eyes almost tearing up and we enjoyed our night with just games and carousels.
This time, I'll accompany him.
