Immersion was hell, the moment we came in here we were immediately given to the Mapeh department and were assigned to teach the students.
All of us in the same department was like tilting our heads in confusion, we were told that we'll just observe how the teachers work and how they handle their class, we weren't told of becoming a substitute teacher!
We don't even listen in our Mapeh class!
"Kaye what the hell are you doing?!" Jamie whispered yelled and I look behind me to see Kaye holding her middle finger up to our Immersion teacher.
"That crazy woman," I said in amusement before giggling, almost all of us in Timado (our class section) trash-talked her for throwing us to this school and dismissing us.
We were all soon called by the main headteacher of the Mapeh department, was soon assigned to various teachers, and was now given the task to go out and teach their class. Great.
The three of us formed a group, Jamie is responsible for disciplining the students since she's great at that I mean one move of her brow and shell looks like Ms. Minchin. Kaye, on the other hand, is the one responsible for writing down the lesson into the Manila paper and I must teach the lesson of course with Jamie and Kaye's cooperation as well.
(AN: Ms. Minchin is a character from the Philippine movie Princess Sarah and was known for being an evil teacher)
As soon as we enter the classroom it was like stepping into the marketplace but without the products being shouted instead, it was students screaming like a banshee. Girls forming their group and gossiping, the other would braid hairs and apply lip tint on their lips. The boys were like animals in the zoo, it's as if they have finally regained their freedom and decided to start a riot in the class.
We almost want to back down from this task but held it in, we still have 13 days till this misery ends.
"Everyone! Sit down properly and put the things on your desk inside your bag, now!" Jamie yelled at the top of her lungs, the kids looked at us in curiosity, and fortunately, they look at us as strangers and felt uneasy around us.
By the end of the day, I'm sure they would start to feel uncomfortable in their behaved state and would start a commotion soon.
"We're students in the senior year, we are now the substitute teacher for your Mapeh subject" Kaye started and I gave her a thumbs up internally.
"Now that it's settled, you can call me Ms. Angelica, they are Ms. Jamie and Ms. Kaye" I pointed to the two and the students obediently call out our names and I felt something rushing into my body.
It felt good to be looked up to and be known as a teacher, your student's fate is handed in your hands and good seeds would flourish while bad seeds would transform into good ones in your rule.
"Now our topic for today is Philippine folk dance now can somebody tell me what is our national folk dance?"
"Ma'am!"
"Me! Ms. Angelica, me!"
I was a bit nervous when I asked the question expecting that they wouldn't answer me but fortunately, they were hot-blooded young people and were ready to try anything.
"Okay, you with the flower hairband" I chose the person who was the first to raise her hands.
"The Cariñosa, ma'am!"
"Very good! Let's all give a clap to her" the class reputed into cheers and applause, great, everything is turning great.
Not.
"Ma'am, do you have a girlfriend?"
"Yes I have" a few of his friends boo'ed and I held back from rolling my eyes, it has been half an hour and their true natures have appeared.
"Ma'am, can I have your number?"
"No thank you" I was beginning to get pissed, no one was listening and my throat is already being sore. Jamie was already in a bad mood after being asked to answer the immature male students to answer their pick-up lines.
"I'll handle this" Kaye murmured to me and thank goodness she brought me out of that hell or else I'll lose my sanity. "Okay students we would have a partner for our next activity and no, singles are not allowed"
Kaye easily aroused the student's attention, she has this knack for easily making connections with others. The way she jokes with them like she's just their classmate but still having that authority on her bones, how she handles herself confidently and never faltering in the face of a dilemma, I truly admire her.
"Ma'am Kaye do you have a partner for prom? I volunteer"
"Yeah no thank you, I need a man and not a boy, or else I'll look like a nanny" she rebutted, and the girls just exploded into cheers and some even pointed at the guys.
Kaye uses love advice and colloquial words to evoke the student's attention and it worked but in turn, it got so noisy that the other students in the next class looked at us.
The clock strikes 10 and we all welcomed the freedom that we finally achieved. I collapsed on my seat, my soles aching from standing too much and my voice already showing signs of being sore. I felt like a jelly, my whole body turning soft from exhaustion.
"Ugh, this is why I don't want to be a teacher. Why did I go to this strand again?" Jamie complain and I nodded internally, too exhausted to nod.
"I can't wait for Friday to arrive" Kaye said, the other students from the other section came and sat as well.
We were still strangers to each other, Paler was the only person that we knew since she was also a student from the same high school that my friends were.
Peace reigned, the female teachers were out chatting and pressing on makeup products on their faces. The male teachers were out playing with the male students, the sound of the ball bouncing into the floor creates a rhythm that made me want to sleep.
"Thirteen more days, thirteen more bloody days" I cursed and hoped that this peace could last.
