On Christmas morning, the doorbell woke me up and I dragged my feet to the front door.
A delivery guy was standing there, a clipboard in his hand and a carton box behind him. His hair was gelled to the back and he looked ridiculous in an ugly Christmas sweater. "Miss Thorne?" He asked.
I nodded and stretched for the clipboard for me to sign. He handed it and showed me where to sign, which I did.
"Merry Christmas," he beamed.
"Merry Christmas," I said groggily, bending down to pick the box.
It wasn't too heavy so I didn't have a problem carrying it into the house. Setting the box in front of the Christmas tree which I decorated when I got back from dinner last night, I sat down too.
Removing the tape I took out the contents of the box. It was the latest Nike trainers that I had admired a while back but I never went back to actually buy it. I remembered telling my mum about the shoes.
In another smaller box were novels. Novels that I'd been interested in buying for a while now. I flipped through the pages and I noticed that every single one of the books were signed by the author's some with words inscribed on them. I wasn't the biggest reader but when I had the time, I read a new book.
I smiled and began to wear the new shoes which fit perfectly well on my legs. I stood up and tested them, running around the living room.
As I was taking the shoes off, I noticed a little inscription on the side of the shoes. Looking closer I noticed that it was a signature and not just any signature, it was Blessing Okagbare's signature. The fastest Nigerian sprinter and I was a huge fan of her.
I screamed and began dancing around the living room. How my mother happened to get all these items signed was beyond me.
After a while of dancing I decided to take everything upstairs to put them in their places and just when I thought that the carton that held the items earlier was empty, I found a note inside. I sat on my bed and read it.
Liv,
We're sorry we weren't there for you both during Thanksgiving and this Christmas. No matter how much I apologize, nothing is going to change but we hope you can accept this as our apology and peace offering. Merry Christmas darling.
Love, mum and dad.
I read the note over and over again until I felt my eyes stinging. I quickly stood up and stuck the note between two books on my shelf.
After taking a quick shower, I changed into comfortable clothes and went downstairs to watch TV, all I'd been doing since.
The movie I chose had a party scene and an idea popped into my head. I picked up my phone and face timed Cal.
"Hey babe," he said when his face came into view. "Merry Christmas."
"Merry Christmas Cal," I smiled. "When are you guys going to be back from your trip?" I went straight to the point.
