Lucinda

Today I decided to be a bit more mischievous than usual.

Contrary to popular belief, I didn't wake up and decide to be a menace. In fact, it technically came in the heat of the moment. Last week was my twelfth birthday, and I had been ecstatic to find out that I could now stay at home by myself. Mom taught me many different things I could cook myself for lunch or dinner, and Dad gave me a talk about what to do in certain situations, such as a fire or a break in. They knew that I was perfectly capable of taking care of myself.

What they didn't know was that I never stayed home while they and Rose were at work.

Every day when they left for work, I would sit by the window and wait until they left our house entirely. Once I was sure that they were gone, I also went out. I knew my way around Lucella like the back of my hand. Lucella was all I ever knew, and I couldn't help but wonder what else was waiting for me outside of the island. I made plans to somehow explore the distant lands beyond once I was old enough to. My curiosity about what was on the other side skyrocketed.

A huge smile formed on my face after seeing Rose and my parents leave the driveway. I jumped off of the windowsill before bolting off of the stairs and into my room. I quickly changed out of my pajamas and into my favorite hoodie, blue jeans and white sneakers that had retractable wheels. The reason why said hoodie was my favorite was because it had the words "Future Police Officer" on it. I rushed to the bathroom to take care of my business there before bolting downstairs once more.

I grabbed my satchel, which already had everything I took with me while I was in town, from the hanger by the entrance before throwing it over my shoulder and ripping the front door open. I quickly popped the wheels on my shoes open before heading off the same way my sister and parents went. Today I was going to go see that alley Rose always went to when she was younger, back when she snuck food out of the house.

For years I had been nothing but curious about what was on the side of town where there weren't much people. It must be scary since Rose got grounded for going there. However, I learned from her. I learned how to be sneaky from her, and she didn't even know it. I knew my family's schedules, including when their lunch break was. I knew what time they would call to check in on me. The best part was that they didn't know that I knew all of this.

I skated along the streets of Lucella, which were bursting with life and prosperity. However, I had no time to sit around and admire the city since I had places I needed to be. It was around nine forty-five in the morning, so my sister and parents were probably just starting to head out to do their shifts. Eventually, I realized that I was getting closer and closer to the alleys that Rose stopped visiting two years ago. I knew she would freak if she found out that I went to the same place she vowed to never return to.

On the other hand, I was her little sister, so I was allowed to be nosy.

"Alright Detective, you better be right about her being here."

I flinched and held back a gasp before immediately ducking behind a central air conditioner of the building on my left. Was that...Doggy? It took all of my strength to hold back a snicker. Doggy and Rose finally got an investigation together? I thought that Dad didn't want them having the same assignments since they were a couple, but I guess he changed his mind. I took the smallest peek from the AC unit and noticed Doggy and my sister standing infront of the alley I was trying to find.

Rose scoffed at Doggy's statement. "My investigation led me to this place, I'm sure she's here," she replied in a slightly sassy tone. "Are they looking for someone here?" I asked myself. To my knowledge, the alleys have been abandoned for a long time. I ducked back behind the AC unit before either of them could notice. I looked around before I noticed another entrance to the same alley. I smiled and was about to crawl towards it, but a voice made me stop.
