Lucinda
With the yellow key in my hand, I ran out of the maze as fast I as could.
I had never been that good with mazes. That was the only explanation as to why I was in the old stone maze for the last seven minutes or so. However, my inexperience with mazes wasn't the only reason why I had been in there for so long. There was another reason. The stupid moose was the other reason. He somehow kept cornering me wherever I was. It was as though he knew where I would be, even if he was on the other side of the maze.
Something about him was off.
And I wasn't sure whether or not I wanted to find out what it was.
I climbed onto the roof of the forklift that was somehow there before making a giant leap onto the ladder from it. Once I had secured my grip onto the bars, I flung myself around to the other side and began to climb upwards. Soon, I had reached the top. I followed the railing heading to my right, and after reaching the end, I ran around the corner and through the doorway. I found myself in a room similar to the one that had exploded, but instead of a cracked wall, there was a door locked with an orange lock.
On my left was a doorway with two stairwells leading back down to the bottom. Something was telling me that I needed to go down there and see what was down there, so that's what I did. I slammed the door in the mouse's face before running to my left towards the doorway. Although there was a bear trap infront of it, I managed to jump over it, but I nearly fell down the stairs in the process of doing so. I started to run all the way down shortly after regaining my balance.
I found it funny how the stairwell seemed older than the rest of the docks. Did the builders know that this area was here and simply built the docks over it? Or were they oblivious to the sacred place? I shook the less important thoughts out of my head as I continued to head down the stairs. "Focus on trying not to freaking die, Cindy," I berated in my head. "You can worry about the history of this place later." Eventually, I had reached the bottom.
But what happened next made me stop.
A sudden jolt went through my body, causing me to fall to the ground. I used what little strength I had left to hoist myself upwards in a seated position. I pressed my back and head against the wall as my hands flew to my ears. The voices. They were back. They couldn't leave me alone. I could feel the sweat running down my face as my breath grew heavier and heavier. I couldn't make out what the voices were saying, but I did manage to catch once thing.
"The Insolence watches."
"The voices... make them stop! Why me? Why me?!"
Pony's desperate pleads cut through the rest of the voices like a knife. I forced myself to crawl closer to the doorway in order to peek out of it. Pony was on his knees next to the coffins, his hands grasping his golden brown hair desperately. Tears were flowing from his eyes, mixing in with his sweat in the process. I took that as a reminder, a reminder about why I needed to be strong for the others, even if I was close to reaching my breaking point.
I forced myself to stand up and push the voices out of my head as I used the wall as a guide to Pony. Every time the voices came, my vision would start to get gradually darker for some reason. Having one eye didn't contribute at all, either. While biting my lip as hard as I could, I stumbled over to Pony, who had now begun to sob by that point. "Get it out of my head... get that thing's whispers out of my head! I can't take it anymore!"
Eventually, once I was close enough, I made a run for it and nearly crashed into Pony as I slid down onto my knees in front of him. Pony didn't seem to notice my sudden arrival, so I tightly put my hands on his shoulders and shook him. "Pony, snap out of it!" I demanded. That seemed to grab his attention, but he kept his gaze to the ground. I had debated telling him that he and I were both hearing the same or similar things, but after seeing his condition, I decided against it.
