Something seemed... off.

Michael was in nothing but a white hospital gown and shorts. So was I. So were the three other kids they brought in. However, Sophia, Andrew and Evelyn were nice, which alleviated my concerns a bit. The animals put us in a room with bright blue skies, green hills and shining rainbows on the walls and gave us toys and devices to play with. Andrew and Evelyn were playing with said toys while my younger brother and Sophia talked amongst one another, their cheeks slightly pink. Under any other circumstances, this would've been normal.

However, I hadn't heard anything of Mom and Dad for a while. The same went for Sophia about Marilyn and James. Michael, Sophia and her siblings didn't see anything wrong with the current situation, but I couldn't help but feel like something sketchy was going on. The doctors put us in here nearly ten hours ago and only stopped by to give us lunches, which were suspiciously top-tier, and checkups. I had no clue what the other four thought, but I was the oldest. I was responsible for all of them until our parents came for us.

If they came for us.

After talking to Sophia for a bit, I knew that none of our lives were normal. Marilyn and James had been kind to Sophia, but they immediately started treating her poorly after her younger siblings were born. That didn't stop her from loving them regardless. "It's not like I'm being abused or anything," Sophia had reassured me, "They're just getting me ready for the real world. We do seem to be the only humans left on the planet, after all."

On the other hand, for Michael and I, our situation was somewhat similar to Sophia's. They treated us well and celebrated our efforts, but nothing was ever enough for them. It was always "You did great, but you can do better" for us. In addition to that, our lives were also filled with strange gender roles. We were lead to believe that while the husband should work, the wife should stay home and watch the kids.

I was acting as the "chaperone" for Michael and Sophia, just to make sure that they didn't do anything out of line while Andrew and Evelyn were here, when one of the doctors came in. It was the cheetah from earlier. The only thing I know about her is her name; Catherine. She was a kindhearted person, but she was still one of the many responsible for our current situation. Sophia's younger siblings were ecstatic to see her.

"It's Cathy!" Evelyn cheered as she and her brother ran up to the doctor. Catherine seemed shocked at the twins' excitement to see her and tightened her grip on her clipboard. "I-I'm happy to see you too," she stuttered nervously. That was already a red flag. Catherine never stuttered until now. The doctor cleared her throat before speaking to us. "Your results from the previous exam came back in. The leaders have decided," Catherine informed us.

"Subjects 27807 and 47154 are capable of producing healthy offspring for our research. The rest of you are of no use to us..."

I knew something was up when they brought us here. I was given the title of "Subject 63101". Andrew was still a child, so he was out of the question, but Michael was only seventeen. To be used as a tool for something we thought was preservation alongside Sophia? That was despicable and wrong in so many ways. Just then, a bunch of men wearing black armor and carrying guns filed their way into the room, surrounding Catherine protectively.
