Lucinda
Even after eight months, the infected still knew to go after me and not anyone else.
The infection was still running through my veins faster than I could anticipate, but I somehow managed to hold it back and prevent it from taking over my body. Fortunately, it hadn't changed much about my body. My wounds healed at normal paces, and my systems seemed to be typical. I started to assume that it was because I technically had the infection that they were chasing me and not anyone else. It just made sense.
My previous conversation with Zizzy popped up in my head as I jumped over another shelf in a successful attempt to escape the infected shopkeeper. "You don't know how you feel?" She had questioned. I simply nodded and stared at the floor. "I guess I'm just feeling too much to give you a definitive answer." Zizzy didn't seem like she was going to take that answer. "What are you feeling currently, Cindy?" She added. Knowing that she wasn't going to back down, I had sighed.
"I don't know...sad, annoyed, maybe a bit angry," I had lied. It wasn't the answer Zizzy wanted to hear, but it was the one she was going to get whether she liked it or not. That was the last thing I had said to her before gently forcing my way out of her grip. Then, I made my way through the door I had just unlocked in silence. Just a few seconds ago, I had entered what looked to be a small restaurant. It was kind of odd for it to be in the middle of the store, though.
That was how I found myself picking up a bunch of characters from a bench on the other side of the room. "I'm not even surprised anymore," I muttered with a shake of my head. I turned around and noticed a red key sitting on a bench next to a vault with a purple lock. I looked around for the shopkeeper before going over to the red key and picking it up. As I shoved the key in my pocket, the shopkeeper walked in from the door leading to the parking lot. "Speak of the devil..." I muttered under my breath.
I turned around and jumped over one of the tables before dashing out of the other door leading into the shop. I ran over to Pony, who seemed to be in his own world as he leaned against the shelf. "Pony!" I called out, snapping him out of his trance. It was a little loud and harsh, but there was no time for apologies. Not when I was being chased by an infected. I quickly tossed the carrots over to him. "Here's your carrots. Move the shelf, now," I demanded before turning around to see the shopkeeper behind me.
I gasped as I ducked down to dodge a fatal hit from the staff before getting back up and running away, leaving Pony and his carrots behind. I used my burnt arm to block another one of the shopkeeper's hits and mentally cringed at the pain I felt immediately after. I mentally berated myself at that reaction. "We've been over this, me," I scolded. "Don't. Show. Weakness." I couldn't let others know that I was barely able to take care of myself.
They couldn't know. Otherwise, they'd start worrying about me, and I knew very well where it would lead. I had to make sure that others believed that they didn't have to worry about me. They needed to believe that I could take care of myself and others during this endless suffering. I let out a quick sigh as I practically pushed the door open with my body after unlocking the red lock. If taking down the infected didn't show them I was capable, I didn't know what would.
I kicked the other door of the small shop I was in open, and I found myself standing in a long hallway that seemed to lead to a cargo bay. From the other end of the hall, I noticed Pony leaning on the shelf, which was pushed forward a few feet. I guess he was right about carrots giving him energy. I walked down the hall and turned to my left before seeing a bench against the wall beside me. I tilted my head at the remote control that sat there, but I picked it up regardless.
"What do I need this for?"
