Lucinda

"There's literally no where else it could be, Cindy."

"...That's a good point."

I had nothing but a bad feeling as I stared at the door ahead of me. Zuzy has managed to convince me that something with a yellow lock was inside. Even in the darkest of times, we still acted immature about some situations. "Alright, alright. We'll go check it out," I said after finally giving in to the sisters' pleas. I went up to the door and opened it before using my flashlight to light up the room. It seemed to be some sort of classroom. There was a table on the right that had a vault with a yellow lock on it.

I slowly stepped inside and gestured for Zee and Zuzy to follow me once I knew it was safe. Suddenly, I started hearing incoherent voices in my head. I assumed that my head was playing tricks on me. I went up to the vault and unlocked it as the zebras explored the room. There was a mop inside of the vault. Maybe Zuzy could use it to get that shiny thing out of the vent. I grabbed it and turned around. I was about to tell the sisters that we could go, when the voices started to sound clearer.

"Lucinda...Lucinda....Lucinda..."

I felt the hairs on my arms stand up. They weren't just calling. They were calling me. I immediately whipped my head around the room, but I couldn't find the source of the voices. I turned to Zee and Zuzy, and I realized that they must've been hearing the voices, too. "Can you guys hear...voices?" I asked. "They're calling my name..." The voices drew me to the board at the end of the room. It was too dark to see what was on it, but I found myself slowly stepping closer.

Then it hit me.

"Wait a minute..." I started. "...what's a classroom doing in the sewers? That's disgusting!" I snapped back into reality and grabbed both Zee and Zuzy with my free arm. "Come on, children," I partially joked in an attempt to lighten the mood. "It's dangerous here." I dragged them out of the classroom, and the voices gradually stopped calling. I handed the mop to Zuzy. "That should do the trick," I said to her before going back to the large tunnel.

Once we were back in said tunnel, Zee stood infront of the vent before her sister climbed onto her shoulders. Using the mop, she was able to get the shiny thing she mentioned earlier out of the vent. However, Zuzy lost her balance and caused the two of them to fall along with the key. I stepped forward and grabbed the key. The white key. Zee gently and forcibly pushed Zuzy off of her before standing up and turning to me.

"Hm...going off of previous times, this is the final key we need to find," I explained under my breath. "But we still haven't found the door that needs this key. I'll hold onto it until we find where this goes." With that, I put the key in my pocket. I turned to the opposite doorway on the other side of the bridge. I gestured for Zee and Zuzy to follow me as I went over it to the opposite engine room. There was a lot we still had to do.

Yet we had so little time.

____________

Up until now, the purple key had always been as useful as a white crayon on white paper.

The vault usually had an extra gun or ammo inside whenever I would open it, and I got so used to it that I simply ignored the purple key when I found it in some places. It wasn't until recently that it started to become more useful to us. The three of us were back at square one. Zee unlocked the purple vault, and we were surprised to see a red key inside. Once again, the very thing we needed had been right at the start the whole time.
