Lucinda
I got out of the medical tent as soon as I felt the orange key in my hand.
"How do these soldiers stay in the ground without dying?" I asked myself as I noticed Pony shooting one of said soldiers with Willow's gun. Fortunately, I had mostly memorized where the soldiers would pop up, meaning that I knew the places I needed to avoid walking over. I stood still for a few moments to make sure that Pony would be okay before turning around and running towards one of the many buildings there were in this outpost.
Speaking of Pony, I realized that he was starting to grow more confident in himself and his abilities. He seemed to be doing a lot better now than he was back when we first returned from the refinery, hurt and guilty. I assumed that he used Zizzy's "demise" as booster for self-improvement. Good for him. After wandering around the building trying to find the door, I came across it, and it had an orange lock on it. Using the key I held tightly in my hand, I was able to open the door and go inside.
I was greeted with what seemed to be a bedroom for the soldiers. There were bunk beds lining the walls, followed by a few bedside tables and an odd empty space in the middle of the building. What made said empty space even weirder was the big hole in the room that allowed for the snow and the cold to come inside. "Who built this?" I asked myself as I rubbed my arms in an attempt to warm myself up. I had no clue what it was, but something was telling me that whatever was up there was important.
I bit my lip before turning around. I was about to walk out of the building, but a silver glow caught my eye. On the small table directly in front of the door sat a large shovel. How that little table was supporting its weight was beyond me. Nevertheless, I took the shovel and put the orange key in its place before leaving the building. Suddenly, I remembered seeing a large pile of snow on the upper level. I could only hope that the soldiers weren't waiting to attack in the ground as I watched my boots meet the snow.
Keeping my steps soft and light, I made my way from the dorm building I was just in to the stairs that stood against the large stone wall at the end of the outpost. I let out a sigh of relief once I stepped onto the stairs before climbing the rest of the way up. Once I reaches the top, I turned around and eyed the large pile of snow that seemed to be beckoning me over. I followed its supposed commands with the shovel in hand. Once I was there, I used said tool in order to dig out the uneven surface.
Eventually, I managed to uncover a retractable ladder. I picked it up from its place on the ground before remembering the hole in the roof of that building. This had to be what I needed to use to get up there. Right as I turned around to leave, I heard a growl come from behind me. I turned back just in time to see the bear soldier climbing out of the snow before he narrowed his black eyes at me. I took in a sharp breath of cold air before turning around and running for the stairs.
Leaping onto the railing, I managed to maintain my balance as I slid down. After nearly faceplanting into the snow, I ran back towards the building I was just in, not bothering to notice Pony running back up the stairs, Willow's gun in hand. Ignoring another soldier that had popped out of the ground, I ran through the snow until I reached the building. I quickly entered the building before pressing my back against the wall next to the door and allowing myself to have a few seconds to catch my breath.
I realized that I was starting to succumb to exhaustion. My gasps for air, shaky limbs and wide eye proved as such. My body practically screamed at me to shut down, to pass out and forget everything else, but I knew that I couldn't. Not when I had a job to do. Not when I had so many people to avenge. Not after I had come so far. There was no way I would let everything I had done and gone through be for nothing. "Just a little bit longer..." I tried to convince myself. "Just a little more... then I'll rest."
