Chapter 17 - Defence Against the Dark Arts

The sun rises over the Hogwarts castle. The fifth year students have their first class with Professor Umbridge. Y/N meets up with her girlfriend early  before they go to class.

"Morning baby" Hermione says and pecks Y/N's lips and hugs the slightly taller girl.

"Hi my love" Y/N responds "you ready for the class with the Umbitch"

Hermione holds on her laughter "Y/N be nice"

"Come on 'mione, do you really believe that nonsense she was saying yesterday" Y/N says as they walk to the class "she also voted for Harry to get expelled, I think that speaks for itself"

"Alright fair point, but please don't do anything stupid" Hermione says and Y/N nods

"I won't" Y/N says and they walk into the class where they spot Ron, Jorden, Flo and Cal all seated together.

"Hey guys," Cal says with a warm smile

"Hey. Where's Harry" Y/N asks as the couple take their seats.

"We thought he was with you" Ron says and Y/N shrugs

Hermione sits next to Y/N and notices the new ring on the Ravenclaw's finger "where did you get that from"

Y/N stares at the ring "oh right I bought before we left for Hogwarts" she quickly lies not wanting to explain the real purpose of the ring

"It's pretty" Hermione says and Y/N smiles

"But it's not as pretty as you" Y/N says and Hermione blushes. Suddenly, Umbridge walks in with her fake practiced smile.

"Take your seats children" Umbridge says and and everyone does so in silence.

Suddenly the doors open and Harry rushes inside and everyone turns to stare at the raven-haired boy.

"Sorry I'm late Professor" Harry says and Umbridge smiles unnervingly

"Five points from Gryffindor" Umbridge replies and some of the Gryffindor students groan as Harry takes a seat next to Ron.

Umbridge smiles and raises her wand and books land on the students desks "Ordinary Wizarding Level examinations. O-W-L's most commonly known as OWL's. Study hard and you'll be rewarded. Fail to do so and the consequences may be severe"

"This class is going to be interesting" Jorden whispers and Cal smirks

"More like a total pain" Cal says and Jorden smiles

"Your previous instruction in this subject has been disturbingly uneven" Umbridge continues "but you'll know from now on, you'll be following a carefully structured, ministry approved course of defensive magic. Yes?"

Hermione raises her hand, having opened the textbook and started to skim through "there's nothing in here about using defensive spells" the bushy-haired girl says

"Using spells" Umbridge says completely shocked "well I can't imagine why you'd need to use spells in my classroom"

"We're not going to use magic" Y/N asks

"You'll be learning about defensive spells in a risk-free way" Umbridge comments

"What use is that. If we're attacked it won't be risk free" Harry says

"Students will raise their hands when they speak in my class" Umbridge snaps at Harry and he holds his tongue "it is the view of the Ministry, that a theoretical knowledge will be sufficient to get you through your examinations. Which, after all, is what school is all about."

"And how's theory supposed to prepare us for what's out there" Y/N asks and Umbridge's face is fuelled with anger

"There's nothing out their dear. Who do you imagine wants to attack children" Umbridge says utterly horrified
