Cheryl was waiting in anticipation; squeezing her lover's hand tightly. Her eyes were fixated on Kevin who was intentionally delaying the process to create some extra excitement. Cheryl knew he was doing it to tease her in particular.

Kevin took in a deep breath before pulling a card out of a golden envelope. "Soooo, this years prom king and queen are.....drum roll please....Betty Cooper and Jughead Jones."

The joyful expression on Cheryl's face instantly disappeared and turned into a disappointed little pout as she heard the words come from her best friend's mouth. The hope she had allowed herself te have vanished into thin air.

She knew Toni noticed that she was upset right away as she softly caressed her hip. Her eyes were stinging, but she pushed down her emotions to avoid an outburst. So instead of looking at Betty and Jughead, who were now being crowned, Cheryl stared at her own feet, wishing this awful moment would be over soon.

While she was fidgeting with a red strand of her own hair, she suddenly heard her cousin Betty speak, "probably giving a speech about how long she'd been waiting for this to happen or how much she thought Jughead deserved to be a king." Cheryl thought to herself, feeling a little nauseous.

"I'm just not sure I can accept this." Cheryl heard Betty's mellow voice from the stage. "There is a person that I think deserves this way more than I do, or than anyone really. That's why I want to hand this crown....and this crown." Betty yanked Jughead's crown from his head. "Over to my amazing cousin Cheryl Blossom. And of course her beautiful girlfriend Toni Topaz."

Cheryl frowned, questioning her own hearing. Perhaps she was hallucinating or dreaming or simply going insane. "What?" Was the only thing Cheryl could say in the moment. The words still hadn't reached her conscious brain yet.

"Well what are you waiting for babe, let's go." Toni said as she pulled on her girlfriend's arm, trying to get her to move. It was never particularly Toni's own greatest desire to stand on that stage with a crown on her head, but she knew how much it meant to Cheryl, so of course she was super supportive.

Cheryl was shocked to put it mildly. As she walked to the stage with Toni by her side she tried to come to terms with what was happening. She felt confused and a little overwhelmed, but she could feel sparks of excitement rush through her body, making it difficult to think properly.

"'Prom queens', why did that sound absolutely sensational," Cheryl thought to herself while Betty placed the golden crown on top of her perfectly styled hair. Before leaving the stage her cousin mouthed a "you deserve this" and gave her a thumbs up.

Cheryl's anxiety and insecurities vanished once all eyes were on her. Compared to a lot of people, who are apprehensive of speaking in front of a large crowd, it was one of Cheryl's useful skills to appear extremely confident and completely unbothered.

"Thank you Betty, that was truly so kind, I'm forever in your debt." Cheryl started off her short speech with a few words of gratitude. She then spoke about the honour and the responsibility that came with this title and how wonderful and important it was to celebrate love in any way, shape or form.

To finish off her speech Cheryl turned around and gently placed her hands on Toni's face, she moved forward and placed a kiss on her girlfriend's gorgeous lips.

Most people were applauding, cheering and congratulating them on their victory and their love. A few however didn't exactly appreciate what they were seeing. "Jeez just take your business elsewhere, we don't need to see it." A boy in the very back shouted. Some whistled and laughed at them, making a joke out of it.
