Ichika wasn't the best cook. Now, scratch that, she was awful. She spent so much of her life working at call centers that she hadn't had time to refine her more 'motherly roles'.
Her son though? Takashi was an excellent cook. He could make anything after seeing the recipe only one time and Ichika was both proud and grateful that her son was so capable.
She lifted the large bowl of shogayaki and placed it next to the white rice and shredded cabbage.
Takashi had done such a fine job with the dinner, it looked so delicious.
The shogayaki consisted of thin slices of lean pork, browned in the pan, and then briefly braised in a sauce of grated ginger, soy sauce and mirin. Grated onion and garlic was used to round out the taste. It looked so good, steaming and glazed.
He even made onigiri, the rice balls molded to perfection, and Ajitsuke Tamago, the eggs glistening and their colors pure.
She was blessed.
"Takashi, when will she be here?" Ichika asked, placing chopsticks around the kotatsu.
Takashi was sitting on the couch, wiping mana's face from the snack she had earlier. Mana puffed out her cheeks, begrudgingly allowing her brother to do as he pleased.
"She'll be here soon," was all Takashi said.
Ichika had noticed something off in her son since yesterday. She had come home early to her son in a bad mood, completely out of character.
The mother didn't quite know what had her son in a tizzy, but she wanted him to smile, so, she had suggested inviting that girl he liked over to dinner. His eyes had widened though he said nothing, but whipped out his phone and a few minutes later he finally smiled, saying you'd love to come over.
Ichika was happy to finally see Takashi smile, but now he was nervous. Her son did not like others worrying for him, so the nervousness wasn't so overt that you could just tell... but he couldn't hide from his mother.
Takashi stood and Ichika placed a hand on his shoulder, "Takashi, are you alright?"
He looked to the ground then up at his mother with a lopsided smile, "I'm fine, ka-chan, I'm just dealing with childish feelings."
Motherly love colored her heart at her son's forwardness, "Maybe you can say it out loud and it'll help?
Takashi sighed, but didn't step away, "I really like her, but I'm just worried she won't feel the same in the end..." He trailed off, scratching the back of his head.
Ichika smiled and placed a hand on her son's shoulder, "There isn't anything not to like. You're such an incredible person, Takashi. Someone I'm proud of."
And she was, she would gloat to her friends at work about her incredible son. Some of her fellow coworkers would praise her and others would sneer in jealousy. Yes, she would tell them all bout the perfection she birthed.
Her son just gave a small smile, "Thanks, ka-chan."
There was a knock at the door and Luna dashed from her mother's room and jumped to the door, but stopped with her hand on the knob, looking back at her brother, "Can I?"
Takashi nodded as Ichika picked up a cheering Mana, "Onee-san! Onee-san!"
Luna opened the door, "Onee-san!" She shouted, throwing herself outside. Takashi opened the door wider and you were standing there, a ceramic bowl in one hand and the other holding Luna's back as the girl hung from your waist.
Takashi grabbed the bowl from you and you gave him a grateful smile, "Thank you, Mitsuya-kun~"
"Come in," Her son greeted, taking the bowl to the kitchen.
