You didn't know if you could hold back, so you had shut down emotionally.
It was a trick you learned years ago when you had first started cutting up bodies.
Killing people was one thing, it was easy. You didn't even have to look at them while you did it.
But cutting up the bodies? That was different. Each limb removed scored a lasting mark on your soul.
So you learned to stop feeling, making the trigger smoking cigarettes.
It was hard to get off the couch with Kazutora after the hell you went through for five days straight, but you had a job to do. A single thought of Mitsuya had you on your feet and getting dressed.
You had a new uniform on, because tonight was the night.
It was the night.
Tonight.
You fastened the buttons to your new red jacket, wearing it with the sleeves for once, pulled your hair from under the black fur collar.
You tightened the chest bindings and realigned the hem of your red harem pants and strapped on your black heels.
Which led you to where you are now, on an upper balcony overlooking the fight below in the Udagawa Christian Church in Shibuya.
You lit your cigarette and inhaled deeply, elbows resting on the railings while you stared vacantly down at the war happening on the lower level.
You watched Mitsuya match Taiju while Hanagaki and Matsuno guarded Yuzuha.
Hakkai... looked like he was on the tip of the world, ready to fall into an abyss at any moment.
You recognized pieces of the event unfolding, but a lot had already gone differently than last time.
In the past, you, Koko, Inui and Taiju took on Yuzuha and Mitsuya. Mitsuya only being there because Kisaki had called him there... this time Matsuno had called him...
And had manipulated Yuzuha into coming to kill Taiju, framing it in a way that made her feel killing her elder brother was her only option to save Hakkai.
Before, Hakkai had refused to fight, letting Yuzuha fight for him from his fear while Mitsuya did everything he could to protect his friend and Yuzuha.
"Hakkai!" Past Mitsuya yelled, "You have to stand! You have to protect your sister! HAKKAI!!"
You weren't wearing your usual grin, something holding you back.
You watched the lilac Toman guy fight Taiju with everything he had, but it wasn't enough. Inui had bashed him in the head really good with a metal pipe when it looked like Taiju was losing.
You just stood there while Mitsuya bled out, the head injury too severe.
"You use violence to protect!! So protect your sister!"
Hakkai disappointed Mitsuya by refusing to stand.
In the end, just before Mitsuya died, he shone like nothing you'd ever seen before. He fought to the last moment.
And when he couldn't stand, he tried his hardest to get Hakkai to fight in his stead... but Hakkai couldn't overcome his trauma from the years of abuse.
He couldn't even move, or muster the words to say goodbye.
Mitsuya's head--
You pulled yourself from that memory, instead focusing on your new present.
