It Started With The Newcomer

And here you were once again. Laying in Beni's arms on the couch. The two of you had fallen asleep after the nightly reading. You were rather grateful for his embrace. It seemed that every time you were in his strong embrace, the nightmares became no more.

Though you were certain that one day you would have to tell Beni specifically what had happened in your nightmares, you couldn't even bring yourself to think about it.

You shuddered even thinking about it-

Beni's arms tightened around you. It must've been you shuddering that caused him to react. Yet another thing you loved about him: Even when he was asleep, he was still willing to look after you. Quite an admirable trait considering not even your parents were willing to do that for you.

If anything contrary. They were the ones who sold you out for not marrying that godforsaken noble. Who even cares who you married or not? And why was that damn noble stuck on you marrying him? It wasn't like he could swoon literally anyone else with his money and power... so why you?

This you would never truly know, and even though his threats were the thing that gave you nightmares in the first place, at least you could sleep knowing that you were strong. You were persistent, and didn't give in to his threats. You even survived a day or two in the badlands. Given, if you had stayed any longer you probably would've died, but you rather not think about it.

Instead you were lucky enough to have come across Beni. If he were any other creature-

No, no thoughts about death. You survived and that was all that mattered.

And now you were here, alive and well, in Beni's arms. How lovely. You honestly couldn't have asked for a better ending. If anything, you would be thanking that stuck up noble. After all he was kinda the reason you had met Beni in the first place.

Beni.

You rested your head in the crook of his shoulder. His sleeping face was a serious one, nothing like the sweet one you had come to love. You remembered when you first met him, that same serious face staring back at you at a moment when you were about to die. Sure it's terrifying seeing that. Beni is an oni after all, but soon you managed to break through the cracks of his act.

Though he appeared tough and scary, he was actually the sweetest being you had ever met. No one you knew was kinder, or braver, or even more attractive than Beni.

Well, yeah, okay. You'd admit it, you have developed feelings for Beni, but who wouldn't? After all he was the sweetest being you'd ever met. In some ways you were glad that you had been exiled.

Beni woke up suddenly. He was instantly alert. You could feel it, as he instantly tensed up.

"Beni?" You raised your head from his shoulder. "What's wrong?"

"We're not alone. I can smell it." That was enough to send shivers down your spine.

"What?" You had heard him, you just needed reassurance.

"Someone is here with us. I can't tell what it is. I've never smelled such a horrible scent before." He twitched his nose.

Under any other circumstances, you would've seen the act as cute, but this was not the time when a beast could possibly be waiting to attack you.

"Here, come with me, Lucky. If it's something dangerous, you run for the cottage, okay?" He held out his arm in a protective manner. He was holding out his arm to shield you if he needed to.

You nodded and came behind him.

Slowly, Beni went closer and closer to where he smelled the scent. You followed closely behind. Soon the sound of whimpering filled the air. Beni grew tenser by the second.
