Winter's Gift

The sensation of a cold drop of water woke you from your slumber. Oh great. It 's gonna rain. You thought to yourself, sarcastically. After all, avians and rain didn’t exactly go hand in hand. You got out of bed ever so slightly, as to not wake Soren.

He was a dragon, so not very affected by the rain. However, if you weren’t quick enough to get the hole at the top of the cave covered, soon enough it wouldn’t be just a you problem.

As soon as you left the bed, you regretted your decision. Both your body warmth and Soren;s had been enough to make it really cold if you weren’t directly close to each other. Or so you thought, however you were instantly proven otherwise. Yes, it was cold because of your body warmth, but the fact that it was actually snowing outside was also probably a huge factor in your little issue. You stared at the snow falling from the sky in awe,

Growing up in Elvira, you had heard much about snow from avians who had tasks to do on land, but you had never seen it yourself. The isle was far too high up in the sky for any of you to ever see the snow, but not so high up to not feel the effects of the cold weather. And now.. seeing it in person, feeling it on your skin…

It was magical.

You quickly hurried to go cover the hole right above the bed to let Soren sleep in a little longer. Being completely honest with yourself, what  you wanted was to watch the snow cover the ground.. By yourself. Back home, you weren’t one of many friends. Those who did come close to you were there because they were forced to be. Maybe that’s a reason as to why you and Soren got along so well. The both of you weren’t people of many friends. Perfect company for.. for each other.

You sat at the peak of the cave, watching the snow covering everything. You watched as the snow slowly created a completely new scenery. It was so beautiful how the snow was painting a completely new picture of nature that was right in front of you. You watched as slowly the river froze over. The scenery was wonderful. It was the most beautiful thing you had ever seen.

“Oh, there you are.”

You jumped, startled, “Soren!”

“Nothing to worry about, it;s just me.” He reassured you.

“I didn’t wake you, did I?” You started to freak out.

“No, no..The dropping temperature in the cave did though.”

You cringed. The thought had never even crossed your mind. Of course it made sense. THe colder it got outside, the colder it was gonna get inside.

“O-oh.. I’m sorry. If I had thought of that, I would've put a couple extra blankets over you.” You said sheepishly.

“Thought of? Dove, are you saying you’ve never seen snow before?” He asked.

“Well.. Yes?” You closed your eyes in embarrassment.

“ Well, I suppose that makes sense. You birdies live way too high up in the clouds to actually see snow falling. Looking at you I wouldn’t have guessed.” He teased. “You look like you fit right in with the snow.”

“Yeah, well that’s the only thing these stupid white wings are good for.”

“Dove.. Do you not like your wings?” He knelt down to be right at the same level as you.

“Well, no, not really. Why would I? My whole life I was taught to hate them because of how plain they are. Us plain birdfolk are the bottom of society. The colorful avians are at the top, they’re the council, the higher ups. They’re all special in one way or another.” You were about to go into a rant about how horrible it was to be in a place where your status was determined off of your wings, but you were cut short by Soren’s hysterical laughter.
