"You Promised!"

Sometimes you would lay in your bed unable to sleep. The thoughts of the past plaguing your mind. The screams of your parents being turned. The cries for help from your siblings. Their hands reaching out to grab you, and the terror in your families eyes. You were clueless as to what was happening, and what would happen if you didn’t save them. But sometimes you would sleep just fine, until the nightmares.

“Where are we going papa?” You were a little kid grabbing onto your father’s hand while he led you to somewhere unknown.

“We are going to see mama. She’s in the hospital-”

“Why is mommy in the hospital?! Is mommy dying?! I want my mama!” You started panicking heavily.

“No, no my dear, mama is ok. She just had a baby. Your new sibling.” Your father chuckled at your cute hysteria.

“A new baby? I don’t want a new baby! Are you gonna love them more than me?” You started pouting.

“What no, no love. Mama and I will always love you because you were our first treasure the creator wanted us to have. But now you will have another baby that will love you too,” Your father bent down on his knees to meet your height. “Listen to me, no matter what happens you must promise me that you will always protect them. You must love them even if they get under your skin.  You must protect them with your life.”

“Yes father,” now it was an older version of yourself.  You are eight now. as before you were five. But you were still heading to the same hospital for the same reason.

Finally you arrived at your mother’s room. And there she was just like you remembered her, but this time she had a child in her arms. Your new sibling.

But when you peered in to look at your mother’s arms, instead of seeing a newborn child’s face, it was your sibling’s face morphing from age two to twelve. Once it had finally stopped, they started screaming.

“You promised! You promised! You promised! You promised!” their face started morphing into the way you last saw them. A zombie.

You jolted awake, in tears. You took a minute to calm down from the shock. However it didn’t take you long because unfortunately it was one you had often. But the dream was still one that terrified you to your core.

What was worse was that it was your brain finding a way to tourture you for the unkept promise. And it was well deserved. You had promised and yet somewhere in the world your family was either dead or roaming the Earth as the undead. That was something you couldn’t forgive, and clearly you wouldn’t let yourself forget.

You put a hand over your mouth as your sobs escaped. You were suddenly aware of where you were. In the bed. More specifically, Reed’s bed. You had decided to stay the night over since you had nothing else to do. You didn’t need to deliver anything to any of the shelters.

And Reed was very persistent. He would always be there to remind you to stay safe. But not just that he would always try to protect you to the best of his abilities. He was very adamant on keeping his promise to the people of the shelters.

But part of you believed that it was also because he actually cared for you. He protected you when he knew it wasn’t necessary because you could care for yourself just fine. Nevertheless he still tried to protect you. Not just that but he was also a gentleman with you. He would compliment you and make small remarks to make you feel good. He wasn’t afraid to let you take control, and that differed him from any other man you had even seen.

Every other man would try to tell you what you could and couldn’t do, they would degrade you because of the way you dressed and judged you for every small mistake you made. But Reed would feed your ego with his beautiful words. And you had to admit, he had made you fall madly in love with him. You were under his spell of love, and rightfully so. Who wouldn’t be when he treats you so well.

“Hey, angel? Are you alright? Why are you crying? Oh my sweet angel, come here.” Reed stretched out his arms towards you to embrace you in a warm hug.

In the state you were in, you were glad to accept a hug from him. In some cases you would’ve been embarrassed to be seen like this. Crying made you feel weak, because you were supposed to take it. You were supposed to protect, and fend for yourself because you promised.

You promised! You promised! You promised! You promised!

You cried harder, this time not even attempting to hide yourself. Reed just swayed you back and forth and hummed to you softly softly. He wrapped you up in a blanket. He grabbed your hand and pressed a gentle kiss to it. You just stayed in his arms, hugging him back.

“Would you like to speak on it? Or is it too much?” He finally loosened his hold on you, but you wished he hadn’t.

You wished he would hold you like this forever. Protect you from the world, and your mind. Your worst enemy. But you felt as if this was something that had been choking you for years. And finally its hold on you was getting so tight that it was practically suffocating you. It was time to open up. Or your conciseness would eat you alive.

“Reed I- listen I know its going to sound stupid, but I’ve been having nightmares from, well from when this all started. It’s been plaguing my brain since I saw them being turned. Before this entire mess came up, I made a promise to my father that I would protect my little sibling from the world and that I would love them regardless of what they did to me. But cme the first zombie and they were out cold. One for the first turned I’ve ever seen. And it haunts me, their voice yelling at me; ‘You promised’ over and over again.” you curled up into a little ball again and buried your face in your lap from being overwhelmed.

You felt Reed pull you into his embrace once again. And you were grateful that he knew exactly what to do in moments like this.

“I know how you feel. I was supposed to care for my little sister too, but as soon as we got away we practically went each on our own. I expected us to stay together over such a tragedy but it wasn’t like that. And now I have no idea what happened to her, but what you must be going through must be worse. I mean you actually saw them being turned. That must be traumatic But hey, it takes an extremely strong person to go through what you’ve been through and still find a way to be a good person, even though it’d be easier to fend for yourself, but you don't. You still find ways to give instead of taking.” Reed pulled your face from your lap and kissed your tears away from your cheeks.

His kisses slowly changed targets. They went from you cheeks to your forehead and finally they landed on top of your lips. You weren’t shocked. There was practically no need for a confession between you two. It was evident enough that you both shared the same feelings for each other. Even so with every second the kiss lasted, the more butterflies grew at the pit of your stomach.

Having the courage to finally pull apart, you both stared deeply in each other's eyes. His face had a huge smile on his face. One filled with hope. Everything is going to be okay and in the end those words were filled with truth. That was the closest thing to normal.

Soon the world would be yours again.

Alright definitely on the shorter side, but I actually really liked the way it turned out. Anyways hope you enjoyed💕
