All Good Things Must Come To An End

“Morning Darlin’,” Duke's sweet voice rang out through the walls of the rented estate.

It wasn’t as big as Duke’s farm that you had grown accustomed to, but it was something. But most importantly it was safe, and considering the good scare you got back at the farm, it was certainly better.

“How’d it go?” You asked, coming out of the room the two of you shared.

His face instantly lit up when he saw you. You couldn’t help but smile at his grin. You walked up to him and placed a peck on his cheek, at which his ears twitched and his cheeks turned the cutest shade of rosy pink, a reaction that he always made every time he was flustered, yet one that you couldn’t get enough of.

“It went well! I told you not to worry, the people here love sweet pastries. If anything, I think I’ve been doing better here in the middle of the sanctuary than on the outside of it.” Logically it made sense, there were more people in the middle of the sanctuary than on the outside of it, after all, it wasn’t often that the sanctuary got new half-bloods. It was an incredibly sad realization, but neither of you said anything about it.

“That’s great! While you were gone, I cleaned up a little and slept all day. Not much, but ehh it’s something.” You said.

Duke laughed and then wrapped you in a warm embrace. It was seemingly out of nowhere, but nevertheless, you still enjoyed the show of affection. You stood there for a whole minute, a whole minute that felt like hours. Yet hours were not enough. You wished to be there in that moment forever.

However, all good things must come to an end. You sighed when his arms eventually let go of you. He seemed to have noticed your disappointment as he smiled and then gave you a kiss.

“I think we’re running out of flour, I’m going to go to the market. Wanna come?” He asked once he pulled away.

“Oh! Yeah! Let me go get my shoes and we can go.” You jumped at the idea of going to the store.

You loved going to the store here in the sanctuary. It was like going shopping in a place unlike any other. Not even shopping in Montell (which you had to do only once, before Duke decided it was too dangerous) was the same as shopping here in the sanctuary. Here in the sanctuary, there was always a new person there. It was mesmerizing seeing all the cool animal features on each individual.

Everyone had such visabally unique features that were… beautiful. And nobody would hide their differences.. It was what made this place so different. It was nothing like Earth, nothing like any other place. The sense of security would follow you everywhere around the sanctuary. Yet you couldn’t stand there and stare so obviously at everyone because that would raise suspicion.

It was hard not to feel like an outsider. After all, that was what you were. You didn’t belong here.. You were out of place. Your friends were on Earth. Your life was on Earth… but Duke was here.

“Darlin’? Are you okay?” Duke’s voice snapped you out of the dark place your mind was about to go.

It wasn’t a new thing. Your mind would often roam and roam until you wouldn’t come back until either the dark thoughts came, or Duke snapped you out of it. It wasn’t bad. The thoughts. They were just.. unfortunate to think about.

Would you ever find a way to get back home? Your life was on Earth… What would happen to Duke when or if you found a way to get back? But Duke was here.

“Yes, I’m fine. Umm let’s go.” You said, taking his hand.

He quickly took the lead and slowly led you to the market, although he had no reason to do that as you knew your way to the market. You suspected that part of that was for your protection. Although you truly did feel safe here in the sanctuary, Duke never felt safe with you around half-bloods that could’ve had malisyth.
