You knocked on the princess’ door. It was almost five in the afternoon, the exact time in which the princess liked to have her evening tea. Being the personal servant for the  eldest Aquince daughter meant that you had to memorize everything about her, to the point where you were certain you knew her better than any possible suiter.

“Enter.” You heard from inside her room.

Instantly the sweet, strong smell of perfume and flowers hit your nostrils. The sweet smell you had grown to associate with the princess.

“Your highness? I bring you your evening tea. Anything else you are in need of?” You started with the formalities.

There was a long silence, before a muffled cry escaped her lips. You weren’t able to see her due to her bed being lifted up to the ceiling of her bedroom by multiple strands of seaweed and coral. Even without this hiding  her from you, you were still certain she was hiding underneath some pillows, due to the muffled cry.

“Princess? Are you alright?” You looked over, not wanting to make her uncomfortable by your presence.

She sobbed, “Do.. Do you mind coming closer?”

“Your highness! That- that would be very improper of me-”

“Bren is out there living with dragons, a human at his side, and Jericho is in love with a blue dragon. Are we still worried about what they have to say about us- two merfolk- together?”Bianca tried to reason with you. .

“If your father catches us I’m dead. If he doesn’t have something to say, then Bellamy certainly will. Did you not hear of what he did to that other poor servant? I hear nobody’s seen them since Bell stabbed their tail.”

“This kingdom has gone to shit. Or it has been and karma is just catching up with us. But either way.. I still need you.. here. With me. Just like how you’ve always been here for me.” She pleaded.

“I.. Fine. Just this once. And if anyone comes in, just tell them you ordered me to give you a massage or something. I do not feel like losing my head today.” You half  joked even though you were pretty sure it was exactly what they’d do if they caught you in a moment of ‘intimacy’ with the princess.

“Thank you. Come here.” She held out her arms,  wanting to be in each other’s embrace, which you gladly accepted.

“See? Isn’t this wonderful? Way better than going about your other servant duties I assume.”

You simply breathed in her sweet, comforting scent.

“Hey..” Bianca was playing with your hair, as you laid on her chest.

“Hmm?” You replied lazily.

“I love you.”

“I love you too. So.. are you gonna tell me why you were crying?” You made eye contact with her.

Bianca looked away for a split second. Instantly you knew what had gotten her so upset.

“Oh. This is about your mother, right?” She nodded yes, still not making eye contact with you. “Sweetie. Come here.” You pushed yourself up so that now you would be the one holding her. She rested her head on your chest and  sobbed, while you stroked her hair with one hand and rubbed her back with the  other.

You picked up a book from the shelf behind her bed. ‘The Eternal Curse of The Moon’. It was one of your favorites. She knew that. You started reading it aloud. Something that not many people knew was that the late Queen Talia Aquinus was a huge fan of books.
