You turned over in your sleep. If turning in your bed could be considered sleep. Since your fight with Beni, you refused to speak, let alone sleep with him in the same bed. Before Charlie’s arrival, sleeping in the same bed as Beni provided a sense of comfort, his warm skin against your own cold skin at night. Maybe that was why you had become so restless.
His touch was no longer there to serve as a blanket, nor were his words there to cradle you to sleep. You were ashamed of yourself for growing so used to his gentle touch. For growing depended on him for comfort. But no, this was his fault, if he was ready to apologize for what he had said about Charlie, then you were ready to forgive him. You were ready to let him back in.
No, it was too late to think about what could’ve been. It was time to look ahead, see what would happen, but it was too hard when the only spark of joy you had was suddenly gone.
You turned once more, your eyes setting on the sleeping silhouette of Charlie on the couch. By now it had been about a week since he had come to stay here. A whole week since you last spoke to Beni. The sight of Charlie sleeping made you sick. That was your couch.. the one where you and Beni would fall asleep on, his raspy, yet gentle voice giving you a million butterflies. And now, there he was. Not Beni, but Charlie.
You pitied the poor guy, but something deep inside you gave you an uneasy feeling. Were you in the wrong? No… How could someone who is just like you, be bad.
The sight of Charlie gave you the sudden urge to see Beni. You hadn’t seen him in a good day or two. Now that you thought of it, where had he been? Where did he sleep these days? Usually the two of you would curl up together, but where would he go if he was no longer with you?
You got up with a sigh, and headed to the mini library room. Where else would he be after all?
You turned the corner of the hallway, and then you stopped dead in your tracks. Was that… Was that crying? You started walking towards the room, and sure enough, Beni was standing there, the book “Of Curses and Courtiers” in his hand. He was facing the wall, meaning that his back was to you. You could see exactly what page his hand was hovering over. The page where the peasant leaves to go aid their sick father.
You could feel your heart sink.
“Beni?” You stood at the doorway, a mournful look in your eyes.
“What do you need.” he sniffled away the tears, but never turning to look at you.
“Oh please don’t be that way, Beni.” You came closer to him, so close in fact, that your hand was about to nuzzle his, until he pulled away.
“Please don’t be like what? Do you realize you’ve got a lot of nerve to say that to me?” He snapped. Even in his frustration, his voice did not raise.
You looked away, ashamed.
“Lucky, it has been a full week. Seven days! Seven days that you haven’t spoken to me. Seven days that I had to go to sleep wondering if you would still even care about me. It’s not a nice feeling. But what hurt me more than anything was.. Was that he was right. He did take you away from me.” Beni looked down, but that simply forced a teardrop to fall onto the page he was reading. Ironically, the tear fell right on the word “love”.
“He was right? Beni, what do you mean?” You looked puzzled.
"Upon the newcomers' arrival, I sensed that he never really liked me. That and he smells horrible. Do you remember what I said about scent and bad people?"
You nodded, “That it’s always the bad people that smell the worst-” Your eyes widened in realization. “No, no, that- that can’t be. Charlie, he’s not bad.”
Even you knew you were lying to yourself. Everything pointed to Charlie being a bad person: The bad gut feeling, Beni’s distrust in him, Charlie being so sweet to you, almost too sweet. But how did you not see it before?
“No- what.. What would Charlie gain from-”
“If it’s not me, then I will make sure that everyone who gives you happiness will be no more.” His voice echoed. It sent a shock through your entire body. You could see, feel, and hear every single moment as if it were happening right in front of you.
“No.. He wouldn’t. Hasn’t that sick bastard done enough to me?” You muttered under your breath.
“What?” Now it was Beni’s turn to look puzzled.
“You remember that one guy who framed me and got me exiled? Yeah, well he was really mad about my rejection, so much so that he.. He killed my family.” You had to take a break before speaking again, “It’s kinda why I enjoy being here so much. Because there is no one to go back home to. And on top of that he said he would make sure he was going to get ‘rid’ of anyone who could bring me happiness.”
“Lucky,” He hesitated, probably about to say something until he changed his mind. “Do you really think he might work for that, that..” He cursed in Abyssal.
“Now that you tell me about your discomfort, I think that may be the case. But it only leaves the question as to how he figured out I was still alive? As you said, most people don’t survive after being exiled.”
“But what he didn’t consider was that you aren’t most people. You’re lucky.” You beamed at this small, but meaningful nickname. Maybe you were going back to normal.
“But if this Charlie guy is really working for someone who is willing to kill your entire family just for your attention, then we can’t just confront him up front. We have to find a way to get him to expose himself, and then see how we can get rid of him.”
“So what I’m hearing is we keep playing along. We keep pretending that we’re still bitter with each other, I keep playing the saint until we find an opening in his lies or we find a way to get rid of him.” You smirked.
“Wonderful. Whatever happens when you catch him in his lies, remember to yell for me if he tries anything. I just got you back, I can’t risk losing you again, but this time perementally.” You could see Beni’s eyes fill with sadness at the thought, while you cringed at even thinking that you had made him feel like he had lost you when in reality, he was the only good thing in your life.
“I promise that won’t happen again.” You wrapped your arms around his neck.
The sadness in his eyes quickly cleared up, as he glanced up at you with a smile forming on his lips.
“Well,” You yawned. “We can deal with evil beings in the morning. How about we sleep here until it is light enough for us to be startled by the light. It has been a while, and to be honest, seeing Charlie sleeping on our coach really did make me sick.”
“He’s sleeping on our coach? Well that’s logical, where else would he sleep?” Annoyance was noticeable in his voice. “I suppose sleeping here for a while wouldn’t hurt. And this room is the first one to get hit by sunlight, so I suppose we should be up before him.” You chuckled at Beni’s refusal to say Charlie’s name, but then again could you blame him? No, no you couldn’t.
And there you laid in his strong and yet comforting and gentle embrace. This time everything felt right. You could finally feel at peace with his warmth radiating against your own body. This was the warmth you had lacked, the warmth that had kept you at peace, the one you relied on to sleep comfortably. This time you were laying next to the right man, because this was no ordinary being, no, this was your oni. And no one could take that from you, not even that newcomer.
