You looked around Soren’s cave, hoping to find something amusing enough to entertain you. Soren had gone out in search of medicine, food, and other supplies. Unfortunately for you.. and him, that meant that everything inside the cave was a possible victim for your clumsiness.
Today your unsuspecting victim was… one of his crystals. In your defense he should’ve known that leaving you alone would end in chaos. And chaos was indeed unleashed at your fingertips as the crystal slipped.
Everything happened in slow motion. The crystal falling, you being frozen in place, and finally the crash.
“Fuck!” You shouted, confident that Soren wasn’t around to hear you.. or the commotion. “Oh, no, no,no, no, no. Fuckkkk, I’m so screwed.” You muttered under your breath.
You got down to gather the pieces of broken crystal pieces, when a thought dawned upon you. The crystal was one of his favorites. If not one of his favorites.. then his favorite, being as it belonged to his Auntie Madlyn. You felt your heart sink further and further down your stomach with every piece of crystal that you picked up.
You grabbed the biggest piece and gripped it tightly. If you had known that your pure stupidity would lead to this, you would have just stayed in bed. Then you felt the sting. The feeling of a warm liquid spilling over your palms panicked you.
The first drop of blood hit the floor.
“Fuck. Shit… Soren is going to come for me for that too.” You said your thoughts out loud. Then you chuckled. You had only known this man for a matter of days, and you already knew him better than anyone back home.
Home.
The world around you froze for a minute as you thought back to what might be happening at home. Was your mother crying herself to sleep? Was your father not allowing anyone to speak your name out of shame? Were they the laughing stalk of the Isle? Was Chorus being mocked because his fiance got cold feet and literally ran away before the wedding?
You knew that he could care less about you. He didn’t even know you. What he did care about was definitely his image. He being a normal, plain white winged avian, and you being the exact same really didn’t affect anything politically. But it did put a great deal of shame upon him and his family.
“Dove? Holy shit-” Soren dropped everything he had in his hands, and dashed towards you. “Are you okay? How did this happen-” His eyes landed on the broken crystal.
All you could do was cry.
“I’m sorry. Soren, I’m so, so sorry. I swear I tried to pick it up, but I just..” You just continued sobbing uncontrollably, the sounds of your guilt echoing across the cave.
“Hey.. No, no. It's okay. Are you alright? Here, show me your hand.” He held out his hand for you to give him your own hand. Even with his gentle hold, you didn’t dare look into his eyes, for the fear of finding disappointment, and sorrow were too great.
A sharper sting on your palm prompted you to look up at what he was doing. He was cleaning your cut, and disinfecting it. You watched in silence as he wrapped your hand in a bandage. Once he was done, he began picking up the pieces of the crystal that were still on the ground.
“Dove?” He said, finally breaking the silence. “Dove, you haven’t looked at me once since I arrived. You haven’t said some snarky remarks. You haven’t even moved from where you’re at. Are you alright?” You just turned around so your back was to him now.
“Hey.. If this is about the crystal, it’s okay-”
“No, it’s not. Stop pretending that it’s okay. Was that not a gift from the only family you ever had?” You snapped.
