A Rose Unlike Any Other

You looked adoringly at the rose outside. It was the only one still as beautiful as ever in this weather. After being trapped in the Beast’s estate for about a month now, you had gotten used to appreciating the small things. Things like the sound of the clock ticking, the creeks of the doors being pushed by the merciless wind, and of course the beauty of the undead flowers.

You were lonely sometimes. It was a wonder how Beast could live in these conditions for so long. Being out here alone for a little bit made your mind wonder. You would think about things you hadn’t thought of in ages. Sometimes to take your mind away from whatever your brain decided to torture you with, you’d go down to the library. It was filled with books, hours and hours of entertainment and knowledge right there.

You would smile every time you entered. He was always there. You could always see him sitting in his favorite chair. You would admire his animalistic features for a split second before he caught your gaze. You could feel your heartbeat get faster and faster as his eyes stared back at yours.

People with heterochromia have always fascinated you. Seeing how a person could have two different eye colors was amazing. This along with his already rare animal features made Beast an interesting individual to study with your eyes. That was the only way you could ever know anything about him. He never really had heart to heart conversations with you.

There were instances where you thought you becoming close and then all of a sudden.. he’d lock himself in his room. Back to square one. You wondered what was in that room. In that area. What made him become so distant?

“Good morning Beast!” You shouted in the library, the echoes of the walls carrying your overly joyous voice.

He groaned. “Good morning Rebel.” He came out from behind a very tall shelf, book in hand.

“You won’t believe what I saw outside.” You beamed.

“What? It wasn’t the Fains, was it?” The bittersweet words came out half joke half cautious.

You chuckled, “No, I saw a rose!”

“A rose?” He looked puzzled. "In a blizzard?"

“Yes, a rose. It was beautiful, especially with all the snow.” You looked extremely happy, but his face just dropped further.

“Right. Um, I have to go look at something. I’ll be back at dinner.” He ran away to his chambers.

“Already! Wait! We haven’t even had breakfast yet!” You yelled after him, but he was long gone. It seemed you were having breakfast by yourself today… again.

You looked out the window. The clock struck six o’clock. It was time for dinner. Although you weren’t too sure if you wanted to go to the dinner table today.

Usually you would go down to have dinner with Beast, but half the time he’d either show up late, or not show up at all. You saw so little of him, you were practically living with a stranger. But then again what were you expecting from someone who wasn’t used to having people around.. let alone a human.

It was often the case that the next morning he would apologize for his absence, but you were still upset with him. He was the only form of social communication you had, and even he didn’t show up at times. You were really upset about that.

This was one of those nights.

You gave him the benefit of the doubt. Maybe he was busy? Or maybe he was ignoring you all together. It always came back to that thought. He was ignoring you on purpose. And tonight would be a prime example of that.
