Sawyer POV

As I'm following Serv to our seats, I feel my phone vibrate and pull it out.

Emily: Hey bud, how's the new family?

Me: don't call them that yet! It's good, been some moments, but it's just me testing them and seeing what I can get away with it, which isn't much

Emily: Why not? They're going to be your "bonus" family, you gotta let 'em in. And stop putting them through the ringer! From what you told me, they seem great and really want to be there for you, please let them.

Me: idk. I don't want to talk about it. What're you up to?

Emily: Hanging with some of the team, we miss you. There's a party tonight, think you can make it?

Me: highly doubt it, but will ask.

I look up from my phone to see Serv talking to a woman, her husband, and two little kids close to Charlie's age.

"Hey Sawyer, this is Alex's sister, Jen. That's her husband, Ryan and their two kids, Liv and Beckham. They live nearby so you'll be seeing them a lot."

"It's nice to meet you, Sawyer. We've heard a lot about you."

I give her a small smile and wave and then turn my focus back to Serv. "My soccer team is having a get together tonight, do you think maybe I can go for a little bit?"

"I don't know Sawyer, we're going to grab dinner with them, then it'll be close to like 7pm. I know Alex and I still need to talk to you about yesterday. I'll ask her, but I think the answer will be no this time."

I groan and mumble under my breath, "This is fucking stupid."

"What did you say?" He leaned over to me.

"Okay." I said shortly. "Mm-hm, that's what I thought you said."

I turn my focus to the field where I see the teams coming out to start the game. I quickly text Emily back.

Me: I'm not sure I can come tonight. They're making Mel go to a dinner and then it'll be too late. Will text you later.

I put my phone away and then watch as Alex gets ready for the kick off. She makes eye contact with me and nods. The whistle blows and she sprints forward.

By the time it's the half, it's 2-1 with Alex scoring one of those in stoppage. I'm starting to get hungry so I ask Serv if we can get some food and to my pleasure, he agrees.

While we're standing in line, I hear, "Hey what's the orphan doing here?"

I clench my fists, but Serv notices. He puts one hand on my shoulder to prevent me from getting away from him.

I glance over my shoulder and see Greg and his buddies all staring at me. I turn back and Serv leans down to whisper in my ear, "Hey, it's okay, just ignore him."

Serv POV

After I whisper in Sawyer's ear, I feel her relax a little bit, but the boys come closer and continue to say stuff to Sawyer. I'm about to turn around to tell them to shut up before I get security, when Sawyer turns around so quickly and suddenly that she gets out of my grasp and heads his way fist clenched, I quickly grab her as she says, "Get off of me, I'm going to get him to shut the fuck up! I already did it once! I'll do it again!" At this point, I quickly pull her away as the boy just laughs at her. I guide her towards our seats and push her down into a seat between Ryan and I. "Just breathe and relax Sawyer, okay? You're okay, I'm not mad, I was about to tell him to shut up too, albeit maybe nicer.." I mumble the end. I see Alex come out to the field and she looks at me, while giving me an okay signal. I tip my hand back and forth as if to say "kind of, but keep playing." She nods, but turns back several times to look at Sawyer who has her head down. In the 72nd minute, Alex slots a goal home and Sawyer looks up smiling and clapping. In the 76th minute, Alex gets subbed out so I decide to take Sawyer to the car to avoid the crowd and the possibility of running into the kids teasing her.
