Chapter 23

Sawyer POV

I wake up with a gasp and try to ground myself. I pat around my bed and find one of Alex's shirts and try to cuddle with it, the scent working to calm me down.

I slow my breathing and tears well up in my eyes and I start sobbing.

"Sawyer?" I hear Charlie call me.

I sniffle and and look to my door to see Charlie's shadow. "Ch-ch-ch-Charlie?"

She runs and climbs into my bed and cuddles into me. "It okay, Sawyer! You be big and brave!"

I nod. "Okay, Charlie. Love you."

"I love you, Sawyer."

I hold onto her tightly and drift to sleep.

Alex POV

I wake up and feel arms around me. I look behind me and see Serv and smile.

"Hi babe."

He kisses the back of my neck, "Morning baby."

"So no teenager in our bed?" He whispers.

"No, but I wanna go check on them both quick." I say.

I walk to Sawyer's room and see Charlie in her bed and that Sawyer has one of my shirts in a death grip.

I see Charlie's eyes open and she looks at me.

"Momma?"

"Hey baby. What're you doing in here?"

She frowns, "Sawyer so scared momma! I came to protect her, tell her to be big and brave! I don't want to hear her cry, momma, make me sad."

'Shit.'

I motion for Charlie to come with me, which she does.

As I close Sawyer's door, I pick Charlie up and head to her room, "Baby, it's okay. Okay? Sawyer's okay. You're the best for going to protect her."

She nods. "I hear her yelling for her mommy and daddy. I had to get to her."

"You're so brave. Thanks for protecting her, baby."

I get her changed and ready for the morning, I didn't even hear Sawyer last night.

I take Charlie downstairs and get her some cheerios and fruit then give her her iPad.

Serv comes down, "Babe I thought we were-"

"Dada!" Charlie yells.

"Hi babe! You sleep okay?"

"I protected Sawyer, she was so scared."

Serv's eyes widen. I point to indicate that I'm going up to Sawyer's room.

I open her door and see that she's still holding my shirt so I crawl in behind her and wrap my arms tightly around her. "I'm so sorry baby that we didn't hear you."

Sawyer POV

I wake up and feel someone's arms around me. I look behind me and see Alex and sigh.

While I want to cuddle, I'm upset about her and Serv putting down their foot and not letting me sleep with them. I get up and head to my bathroom.

I wash my face and look in the mirror. How could they just do that? I'm 14, but I just need them. I'm not sure how I'm feeling right now.

I walk out of my bathroom and see Alex staring at me, "Hey, you wanna go back to sleep for a bit?"

I glare at her, "No."
