Sawyer POV

I have music blasting through my headphones with my eyes closed, scratching Maverick's head when I feel a hand on my shoulder.

I pause my music, but keep my eyes closed, "Five more minutes, momma?"

"It's not your momma."

My eyes flash open and I see Makena staring at me sadly.

My eyes fill with tears and I pull her down into a hug, "I'm so sorry, Makena. I-I-"

"Hey, it's okay. I know."

I nod into her shoulder.

Eventually, she moves to lay next to me and intertwines our hands, "Who let you in?"

"Your momma. She hesitated, but I told her I had to just make sure you were okay. I don't think I can stay long."

She takes a deep breath, "I have to tell you some things that I've kind of been hiding from you, Sawyer. I just didn't know how to tell you.."

I stare at her, "Okay."

She squeezes my hand, "Sawyer, I had a brother."

"Had?"

"Mmhmm. He died in a surf accident three years ago. With my dad. He was 20. He went under on a wave and my dad couldn't find him. And well, he drowned." She says quietly.

I look away from her, "I'm so sorry Makena. Th-that's terrible. I know that doesn't help."

She sighs, "I didn't tell you because I didn't want to upset you.."

I nod, "Makes sense." A beat, "Is that why your dad is uh, the way he is?"

"You can say it. He's an alcoholic. Today wasn't a one time thing. Kind of."

I look at her, "Kind of?"

She nods, "My dad has been a bartender his whole adult life, that I remember. He kept it together around my brother and I, but I'm not stupid, I know he drank. Matthew tried to protect me from it, but he couldn't always. You know? Since Matthew died, it's obviously worst.."

"Seems like it. Does he hurt you?" I ask her.

"Sawyer...I don't want you to worry or get in trouble. I mean you scared me today. Really scared me. You hulked out and no one could get you out of that mode. I'm not judging you, it's just, it scared me."

I bite my lip and nod, "I'm sorry."

I let out a breath, "But maybe my momma and pops can help?"

She nods, "Yeah, maybe. I can talk to my mom too. She works as much as she can just so I can go to surf camp and stuff. But also school is starting so that keeps me out of the house."

I nod, "Just don't want anything bad to happen to you." I say looking at her.

"Nothing will. Alright? Are you coming to surf camp tomorrow?"

I shrug, "Not sure actually."

"Sawyer! Time for Makena to go. Okay?"

"Sure thing, Mrs. C. Will Sawyer be at surf camp?" Makena asks.

"She'll be late, but she'll be there like around 11ish." Momma says.

"Okay." I look at Makena, "I probably have a therapy appointment or something. See you tomorrow?"

She nods and kisses my cheek, "You bet. I'll see you tomorrow. Bye Sawyer."

"Bye."

I watch as she gets up and walks to where momma stands and follows her out.
