Chapter 39

Alex POV

It's game day and I've noticed that Sawyer is just off. Not over-stimulated or amped up, more like tired and just sad. I've asked her a few times and she says she's fine, but I know that she's not.

I walk into the hotel room and see Sawyer asleep and walk into the adjoining room. I see Kate and Charlie watching a movie, "Hey."

"Hey, how was pregame meeting?" She asks.

I nod, "It was good. I'm not starting, but I'll get subbed on at the half. How long has she been out?" I gesture to Sawyer.

"At least an hour. She's been mellow." She says.

"Yeah. Something isn't right. I'm really worried. I'm going to lay in there with her. You got this one?" I say.

"Definitely."

I turn around and walk back to the bed and crawl in next to Sawyer, who unconsciously reaches for me to pull herself closer. She lays her head on my chest and takes a deep breath and sighs.

I card my fingers through her hair just trying to think of what could be going on. I look at Maverick, "You know what's wrong with her, boy?"

He grumbles and lays his head on her leg. "I'm worried too."

I open my phone and text Bree.

Me: Hey, has Sawyer talked to you?
Bree: No, why.
Me: Something is wrong
Bree: What's going on?
Me: She's been just tired, sleeping a lot and mellow, but mellow as in sad. Can you and Hannah talk with her tomorrow morning? We fly to salt lake in the afternoon.
Bree: Sure thing, we're both free. Drastic change?
Me: Enough of a change to scare me.
Bree: Okay.

I feel movement and look away from my phone to see Sawyer's eyes slowly open. She stares at me and then closes her eyes. "Hi baby."

"Hi momma." She whispers.

I hold her face between my hands, "You okay?"

She shrugs, "Slow, tired. I'm okay."

"You're not, baby. Please talk to me."

She shakes her head, "Don't want to, momma."

"I'm worried about you." I sigh.

She just stares at me.

"You're talking with Bree and Hannah tomorrow morning. It's not optional." I say.

"Okay." She says looking down.

I hear a knock at the door so I get up and answer it.

I see Sonnett, Kel, Trinity, Sanchez, and Hatch all standing and smiling.

"Hi. We need Sawyer. Top secret." Kel says.

I smile and look to see Sawyer who shrugs, "You're being requested."

She walks over, "What's up."

"Get ready and let's go, we need you."

She bobs her head, "Can I go?"

"Nothing illegal?" I ask Kel.

"Nope!" She says.

I nod, "Yeah baby."

She turns and grabs a hoodie, "Later momma. Let's go Mav."

''Maybe this will get her out of her funk.'

Sawyer POV

"Okay, you're fast." Hatch says.

"Yes?" I say confusedly.
