I think one important part to have for your story is the targeted audience. While many stories can appeal to many people, they still have a target. Whether it's kids, teenagers, adults, etc.
If there isn't a target audience, then your story becomes muddled. You end up with adult jokes in kid shows or childish humor in adult shows. It has no ground and is rather like a parkour course than a steady road. Which ends up in creating projects such as High Guardian Spice, where the style, story, and characters are set for a child audience but there's random gore, swearing, and violence akin to an adult show.
Not saying that kids shows can't have those elements, they just have to be appropriate for the audience. If a story is for kids, it probably shouldn't have themes of war, discrimination, and murder. Very rarely have I seen that done and in a way that won't scar kids. If a story is for adults, it probably shouldn't have life lessons baby fed as if the audience can't retain information for more than two seconds.
