Is this possible? Not really. It's more rare than never done before. No idea is original but how it's executed is.
I don't have anything against wanting to follow a trend, I have problems when all I see is the same trend over and over again. The special and/or overpowered main character, the chosen one, the power friendship saves the day the damsel in distress, the magic item helps the main character, the massive plot twist that includes a friend turning on the main character. It's all been done before. Admit it, your idea is not original. You took inspiration from someone else and they took inspiration from someone else and the circle continues.
I like to write differently than others. It's me getting my head into a gutter of mangos and peaches and thinking of how I can make a story and add a mass twist to it. Or at least my twist. Every writer should add their twist to their story. It's how executions become different for everyone, unless it's copied and pasted from someone else, that's stealing.
I am the type of person who takes bad ideas, such as the Mary Sue, and apply them to a story, then change it to fit my view. Example: Mary Sue is a perfect girl, loved by all and goes outside the rules of the world, but is actually someone who is trying to protect the people by making them look at her instead of the oncoming threat. This story has the world nearly destroyed by monsters or aliens and has a little piece of land with is magically bordered off. Mary Sue is going by a fake identity and is only acting like she's perfect. I don't know, I had this weird idea and I like it. Feel free to use it.
Or how about this? The MC has these cool powers and is super good at using them right off the bat. But instead of making them brag about this power and putting down everyone else, like saying "you're a wimp". We make this power unstable, it's a disease or just dangerous and it destroying itself because of the clashes of powers and strengths to those powers.
Those are just some ideas and how to change them up.
