If it exists, the so does its opposite. A hero needs a villain, that type of opposite. This also includes genres, character types, organizations in stories, meanings, methods, and thought processes. I do believe that people are all different and it's because of those differences that such series as Madonna Magica were created. If everyone was the same, then so would everything we make. Which is damn boring. There has to be some form of creation from the writer's mind to be put in form of a story. If you write about the same thing all the time, or write what everyone else writes, then the subject becomes over saturated and boring unless something different is brought up.
MMORPGs, well known series? SAO, Log Horizon, No Game No life, Overlord. I'm a fan of Overlord in particular, it's the same concept and idea as the others of its genre, but what it does is also completely different. There's more to the characters and world than what it seems and it's more interesting to see human nature in a villain than just looking at a bad ass villain.
So what's going on? Overlord is the opposite of SAO, it focuses on the villain and shows more the human side than the fantasy game player side of that main character. You as a writer can also make twists and turns, turn protagonists into antagonists and the other way around, as I've said before, pure light or darkness does not exist in a natural setting.
A good example is the savior story in religions. I was with my sister and read a story about a god who would be born as a human and free the people from the villain. A common theme in many stories. This can also be represented in "savior" stories. The story of a chosen one or someone who just ended up there who is meant to bring peace back. Now, I remember during Zestiria's time when it was new, there was a theory, it was about the shepherd becoming the next lord of calamity when their mission was done. Unfortunately the game didn't do that, and it was for the better.
What do I have to say? Well, back to my idea, I wondered what would happen if the villain didn't get rid of the hero and instead raised the hero to become the next villain. This, is Crest of Aspira.
Take an idea and think of what would happen if a story or theme or other went another direction. Perhaps you'll get new ideas from there. After all, nothing is original anymore, so use any idea you want to. Just don't steal work and you'll be fine.
