Ranking of Kings is unlike any anime I've ever seen. It's full of conflict and mystery yet it never feels like you're being left out. Whereas stories such as "When the Stars Align" expect you to know everything before you read it, or "Song of Nature" sets up the conflict just for it to be ignored and resolved in a two-second ending, Ranking of Kingstreats you with respect. It doesn't expect you to know the world before you watch or pretend something is important, it knows what to focus on and how to keep the audience intrigued.
Characters don't shout their motivations or tell you what they're thinking. You can see it on their face or feel it in their body language. The main character doesn't say "this person must be evil because they killed my dad!" He wonders why the person did it, and we find out through flashbacks. The character also isn't pure evil or pure good. Miranjo is despicable, she killed the last queen, attempted to kill the main character, and started a revolt against the kingdom, but you can see why. She wants her simple life back with the King, and you find out that she was just a girl who was mistreated by the people until she met the King.
