I love organizations, I really do. Crest of Aspira has like, twenty, all being about 100+ members but only a few are really looked into. I love making them, I love going into the process of figuring out details. Who they are? What their goal is? What they do in the story? I just have so much fun.
But what is the meaning of organizations? It's a way to create some tension in a story and/or move the story along. I quite like the info dump organizations. They're fun because I have a way to info dump the reader and make it natural. Some organizations help the main characters while other oppose, they can also oppose each other or work with each other, which can make for fun scenes.
Organizations should have a purpose for existing. Even small market organizations and guilds have a purpose. Sometimes just hanging out is a valid reason. But they're not just there for the character count. They serve their purpose, whether it's to gain info, trade for goods, make a statement, oppose a side, help a side, or anything else really. It's an open ended book. If they're just there to do something but there's no reason why, then what's the purpose? A group doing something isn't as important as to why they're doing it.
The founder also has to be taken into consideration. Who is the person that started it and what do they want? Has the organization been true to its original legacy or has it deviated? Are the members still fighting for their goal or are they just hanging out for fun? All have to be considered when making a organization.
Who? What? Where? Why? How? The basics of writing. Take some time when writing an organization and make them the way you want them to be. Keep in mind everything it needs and what it could be lacking. The people involved are important if the organization is going to continue or not. So take time to figure out who the members are.
