I stop suddenly in the middle of the hallway, halfway to the front door with a single thought plaguing my mind. What am I forgetting? Come on, think Mariana. I know what I'm missing is important, it feels like it's on the very tip of my tongue, and yet my mind is failing me.
This is so frustrating. What am I forgetting? I give myself a moment longer to think.....Yeah, no, I have absolutely no clue. All that I can recall is that it was important. I'll end up remembering what it is when I need it, which is not helpful in the slightest.
Deciding that whatever I was looking for must not have been that important if I managed to forget what it was, I grab my bag and rush to the front door. I don't want to be late on the first day of the new school year. I reach for the door and pull down the handle, except it doesn't move an inch. It's locked. Of course it is. On the bright side, I remember what I was looking for - the downside, I have no clue where they are and I'm going to be late.
Keys. Keys. Keys. Keys. Where did I put my damn keys? This is so annoying. I literally had them yesterday after I came back from my best friend Tara's house. Ok, it's fine you just have to retrace your steps.
First, I came in the door and then I went to get a drink- wait a minute. I momentarily pause, stopping in my tracks. I didn't? Did I? I quickly run to the kitchen and open the fridge and a glimpse of shiny silver catches my eyes and to my delight, sitting there "YES MY KEYS." Finally. I grab my keys from inside the fridge, the cool metal only a slightly colder temperature than my hands on this chilly September morning.
I'm surprised that none of my family saw my keys in here and removed them. They've been sat there for a good 10 hours.
I turn around and begin to leave the kitchen when, much to my dismay, I'm met with the devil incarnet, as I like to call him.
He gives me a disgusted look "Weirdo. Why'd you leave your keys in the fridge?"
"Because my usual spot in the freezer was taken by the bag of frozen peas dumbass" I reply immediately, sarcasm laced in my tone. Younger brothers are something entirely different. Like, seriously, anyone else could tell that leaving my keys in the fridge was an accident but not this dumbass. I can not and should not have to deal with him this early in the morning. "Bye Luke" I say, deciding not to deal with him further. I leave the kitchen and saunter towards the front door.
"Bye, Anna, hope you don't get hit by a bus on your way to school." He says with fake kindness in his voice, making his words sound like a borderline threat.
"Thanks how kind of you." I say, still walking to the front door.
"I said I hope you don't. That is kind of me to care about my sister." Sure, buddy.
"THE ONLY WAY I'D GET HIT BY A BUS IS IF YOU WERE THE ONE DRIVING IT." I shout so he can hear me and with that, I shut the door and let out a huff. This is going to be a long day.
Locking the door, I'm startled by someone giggling close behind me. "What was that all about?" The person says.
I turn around and inspect the good-looking guy a few feet away from me. He has messy blonde hair, a few loose strands slightly covering his face. His bright blue eyes glisten in the sunlight and hold admiration. His face is perfectly tanned, how that is possible in Autumn is beyond me. His eyebrows are perfectly shaped and his jawline perfectly carved. He has an unmissable smirk plastered across his beautiful face.
"Sorry, who are you again?" I ask, trying to take his ego down a peg.
"Ouch, you hurt my feelings, Rhi." He says frowning for a moment and holding his hand over his heart.
