"A company?" My brother Luke says from over my shoulder, clearly he's read the letter too. "why don't I get a company?"
"Obviously no one liked you enough to give you one." I reply with a sarcastic smile
"If that's the case then why do you have one?"
"Luke she getting it because she's turned 17. How do you know you won't get one when you are 17?" My mom tries to reason. I stifle a laugh. Yeah cause this is a normal thing to happen. Keep dreaming.
Companies don't just- well I guess they do but very rarely.
"Do you know who this is from?" I ask my parents.
"We have no idea." My mom replies.
"We thought you might have more of an idea than us." My dad continues.
"I have no clue." I say, scanning the page again. It's strange that someone would give me a whole ass company and not even add their name. It is signed at the bottom but the name is completely unreadable.
Before I can dwell on it anymore, I hear a knock on the door. "That'll be Jackson, I've got to go or I'm going to be late, bye."
"Bye, happy birthday." My parents say and I hear my dad scold my brother telling him to say happy birthday.
After a hushed argument I finally hear a quiet "happy birthday" from Luke tossed my way.
When I get outside Jackson greets me by wishing me a happy birthday and hr gives me a hug. I praise him for the astonishing present that he made me. We get in the car and I start to process the whole company thing, I keep quiet while I do.
The only noise in the car is the faint sound of Taylor Swift Jackson is playing on the radio. I love Taylor Swift, Jackson's never really listened to her songs but he hasn't switched the radio over which is a good sign. Maybe it's because it's my birthday, maybe it's because he secretly enjoys her music, either way it's good for me.
A company. I own a company. I'm 17 and I own a company. Yeah I'm not gonna get used to that. Is it even real? I have so many questions and so many thoughts racing through my head. How am I supposed to run a company? I don't know the first thing about running a company. Who gifted me this company and why? This is so strange.
I'm silent, deep in thought the full way there. "Something wrong?" Jackson asks.
"I'm just thinking." I reply.

It's currently break time and we are all gathered at a long table in the library. We talk quietly amongst one another until it goes silent for a few beats.
"I got a letter." I blurt.
Everyone looks at me with confused faces. "A letter?" Cassie speaks up for everyone.
"From who?" Mason asks. He and Jackson are friends again. But I still don't know what happened.
"That's what I would like to know." I reply.
"Please don't tell me it had an -A signed at the bottom." Wes begs.
"Someone's been watching too much pretty little liars." Says Tara.
"There's no such thing as too much pretty little liars and you know it." He responds sassily.
"Off topic here." Jackson rolls his eyes at our friends discourse. "What did this letter say exactly?"
I tell them the synopsis "It said that now that I'm 17 I own a company. I can't run it alone until I'm 18. I'm not allowed to sell. It says about how smart I am, obviously. It was written as if they had wrote it a while ago and says that the company would've been given to me if something bad happened. And then there were some random numbers at the bottom. I have no clue what's going on."
