today is my first day back in school. i'm basically failing now, so that's... peachy. all the work i missed while i was gone immediately equals a zero. 

im walking into my science classroom, it's different. i notice the kid. joshua. why's he here? i can't avoid him if he's in my class.

the teacher walks up to me, her lips are in a thin line. she must know. i look around the class. all their eyes are on me. they all know. 

"you sit by joshua dun," she tells me and i curse in my head.

i slowly walk over to him. he reaches over and grabs something out of his bag and then slides the box over to me. they're beat headphones, more expensive and a more recent generation than the ones i had. 

"i'm sorry i broke yours," he says. 

"it wasn't your fault. i should've paid attention to my surroundings."

"maybe both of ours.."

"mostly mine," i tell him.

"oh."

"im sorry i punched your nose.. and made it bleed."

"it's okay," he says.

"it's not. i'm sorry.." i look at his face and our eyes lock, "joshua."

im home alone now. dad forced mom to go to chemotherapy so she 'could live for me' even though she flat out refused because 'i'm a teen and it's not safe for me to be home alone'. 

i spend my time watching steven universe, and spacing out mostly, but it's nice to have the quiet on my side. no arguing, no fighting, just... silence.

and my overthinking, of course, has ruined it.
