"you should. i don't know. talk to him."

"i can't."

"why not."

"i..."

i look at dad. his eyes are less tired. they look soft and worn. i want to fall right into them like a small child. and let dad hold me while i cry about a stupid boy crush.

there's a knock at the door and all my thoughts fall away. i assume it's joshua.

but when i open the door, it isn't. it's the mailman.

"tyler joseph?" he asks.

"that's me," i reply.

he hands me a letter.

"thanks," i reply, quickly shutting the door.

i sit back on the couch next to dad.

"is that the letter?" he asks.

"yes."

i rip it open as carefully as i can manage.

i read over it. it lists out all my scores and then at the bottom.

it says i passed in green bold letters.

"i..."

the words fail to escape my mouth.

"you passed!" dad says, i can hear his happiness.

i want to tell joshua. but i'm angry at him.

it's stupid to be angry at him. he doesn't like me like i like him. he doesn't notice every little thing about me like i do him.

it was stupid to think he'd know my full name.

"we should get ice cream to celebrate!"

"okay," i reply.

"get your coat."

"okay."

i follow dad out the door.

joshua is sitting on his front porch and i am hit with a ton of guilt.

but i ignore it and let dad reward my passing.
