joshua sat next to me. the tv played in the background.

"i love you. you know?"

"what?"

"as your friend. i love you.. and i care about you."

"oh okay."

"so, how did your ged test go?"

"you guess."

"i did already. remember, earlier?"

"guess again."

"you passed."

"correct, my good friend."

"good job, tyler!"

"thank you!"

"what should we talk about now?" joshua smiles.

"no no. you're gonna talk today."

"what?"

"you talk."

"but i have questions f-."

"you talk, joshua."

"okay, about what?"

"your family?"

"uhm... i have a dog. and a little brother, jordan."

"i know all that. i've been to your house."

"i have two sisters."

"didn't know that."

"yeah, they were both at friends' houses."

"oh. what are they like?"

"they're nice."

he smiles.

"i'm sorry-," his smile drops, "i can't pretend like i'm not worried about you. in the way you talk or the way you stand. like you have a wall against me and i don't know how to fix that."

"im not something for you to fix, joshua."

"i don't mean it like that. i just-. do you have something against me?"

"no."

"then why don't you talk about your mom, or your dad? the only time i've heard you talk about her was yesterday and to tell me she's dead."

"my dad is nice. he's great."

silence. i don't want to talk about mom. i can't. i won't. it hurts too much.

"what about your mom?"

no.

"tyler."

no.

"tyler?"

please no.

i can feel the words fall out my mouth like vomit.

"she was an abusive asshole."
