i watch football with dad, waiting for school to be over so i can go hangout with joshua. i put my fingernails to my mouth and start to chew them off like it's a chip. i'm so nervous. i still haven't even asked dad if i'm truly allowed to go.

when the next commercial comes on, i turn to him.

"yes, ty-guy?"

"c-can i go over to joshua dun's house?"

he gives me a look.

"the kid... you punched in the face?"

i nod.

"uhm... are you sure that's a good idea?"

"we were partners for this science project. we became school friends. he came over last night at one in the morning because he was worried for me and he thought i was dead. he invited me over after school and i really wanna to go. i think it'd be good for me to actually have a-." i'm rambling so hard i can barely breathe.

"slow down, kiddo."

i stop talking.

"are you mentally okay to go to someone's house?"

i nod.

he leans back and places his hands behind his head, "then go ahead. it'll be nice to have a friend. a good idea. i'm happy for you."

i smile and lean back against the couch, my eyes glued to the tv. but i'm not watching whatever player is on the screen. all i can think about.

is what i'll be doing when joshua gets out from school.
