Mias POV:
I took a shower and got ready for my meal with Charles. I'd not heard a word from him, but assumed it was still on, because why wouldn't it be?I waited for it to hit 7:50 and headed down to the hotel reception, keeping my eye out for a car or a driver or someone who looked like they knew where I was meant to be going.
Nobody came.
I waited until gone half 8, texting Charles multiple times but getting no reply. I assumed he'd gotten caught up at the track, marking it down as no big deal, yet I was still a little deflated.
'What're you doing all dressed up?' George asked, making me jump a little.
'Me? No reason.' I shrugged him off.
He stood back and looked me over, shooting me a wicked grin.
'Date didn't turn up?'
'Something like that.' I said slowly, not wanting to give him names.
'Come on, let me take you out.' He said, holding his arm out to me.
'No I really shouldn't.' I stuttered, knowing that if Charles was to show up, he'd be mad to see me on a date with another driver.
'Oh come on, I've had to leave my room because the sound of Charles fucking his ex was giving me a headache.' He laughed, guilt painting his face when he realised what he'd just said and who he'd said it to.
I felt like I was about to throw up but covered it well, taking a breath and looking down at the floor. I'd dressed up nicely and gotten ready, whilst he was upstairs sleeping with his ex in the room next to mine.
'You know what, let's go.' I said, reaching for his hand instead of his arm.
'You sure?' He asked, worry on his face knowing he'd just accidentally wound me up.
'I'm sure. You pick, though. I can't make choices.' I laughed, flashing him my best fake smile.
'I know the best place.' He said, after a few moments of hesitation, walking me out to his car.
It was now 8:55, and there was no sign of Charles, yet he seemed to think I was the one who had stood him up.
Charles: You stood me up? Really?
Me: You were too busy screwing your ex.
Charles: what? I got caught up at the track. I've not been back at the hotel all day.
Me: George said the sound of you fucking eachother was so loud it forced him out of his room.
I knew George wouldn't lie, but at the same time, neither would Charles. Either she'd invited someone over whilst Charles was out or she was playing games again. You could never be sure.
Either way, I sent Lando up to investigate, and despite his begrudging texts and begs to not have to be the one to interrupt, he did it.
I turned my phone off for mine and George's meal, I didn't want to seem like I'd only come with him as a second option, because he really was the loveliest guy. But something about us just didn't feel the same as it did with Charles.
'What do you want to eat?' George asked, pulling the chair out for me.
He'd picked a lovely restaurant, one much nicer than I was expected for a last second pity meal.
