Will dragged himself into the apartment he shared with his boyfriend at eleven at night half-asleep and ready to keel over after a long day studying for his midterms. In his sleepy state, he locked, unlocked and relocked the door six times before he dropped his bag and flung his coat in the general direction of the coat hooks. His eyes were barely open so he stumbled down the hallway, fully ready to flop into bed beside a warm and cuddly Nico. He chuckled to himself at that, thinking about how only a few years before he would have never described Nico as such.

Entering the living room/kitchen, Will stopped dead in the doorway. Nico was curled up on the sofa wearing his skull pyjamas and drowning in Will's Cabin 7 hoodie. He'd tied his hair in a messy bun, had a mug of decaf coffee on the sidetable and was gazing adoringly through half-lidded eyes at cat and her kitten on his lap. He glanced up when he spotted Will out of the corner of his eye and smiled lazily.

"Hey, amore," he offered with wide, innocent, brown eyes. Will gaped, moving to sit beside him with his hands in his lap and an incredulous expression. Part of him thought this was a product of his exhaustion. Sleep hallucinations were a thing and he should know seen as he was training to be a doctor but he didn't think he was that bad.

"We don't have cats," he stated. Nico shrugged. Will stared at him and repeated slowly, "We don't have cats."

"We do now."

"That's..." Will's arms flailed around randomly as he tried to grasp onto a proper sentence. "That's not how it works!"

Nico pouted slightly, batting his eyelashes and moving to lean against Will. Will's arms automatically wrapped around his boyfriend, careful not to squash their new pets. He pressed a kiss to Nico's head and left his face in the tangled, dark hair.

"Nico, angel, I think I'm going insane. Please tell me those are real cats and I'm not crazy."

Nico laughed softly, resting his head on Will's shoulder. His slender fingers petted the animals, trailing down their coats and scratching behind their ears. They were very cute, Will observed. Both had dark coats and were sleek like witches' cats with appealing blue eyes. The kitten had a slash of white on its nose like someone had flicked a paintbrush in its direction. It yawned and so did Nico. Will's heart melted.

"I found them this morning," Nico explained. "I took them to the vet's but neither were microchipped and I couldn't let them take the poor things to the pound. Aren't they cute? Can we please keep them, caro? I've already named them! They're called Golem and Precious. The older one's Golem because the kitten is her preciousss."

Nico giggled and looked imploringly up at Will through long lashes. He had such a hopeful expression that what little resolve Will had evaporated. Golem purred and moved her head in Will's direction. Will crumbled and tickled her under the chin. The small smile on Nico's face showed that he knew he'd won.

"They're adorable," Will admitted, "and I really shouldn't make decisions exhausted."

"I disagree," Nico replied happily. "You make the best choices tired. I love you."

Will snorted. "Because of the cats?"

Nico laughed again. It was such a lovely sound. Will had heard it once and found it so addictive that he'd instantly decided that that was the sound he wanted to hear for the rest of his life. At first, Nico had rarely laughed or smiled but he was doing better now and Will was madly proud of him. The cats were nothing but a reward for his progress and pets were supposed to be therapeutic anyway.

Will kissed Nico's head again and turned his cheek to rest where his lips had been. He clutched Nico closer to him, letting out a sigh of contentment when Nico snuggled into his side. He was half on Will's lap and would have purred if he'd been a cat like the ones sleeping peacefully on him.

"A bit because of the cats." Nico smiled sweetly. He looked almost as tired as Will felt so Will somehow managed to stand up carrying all three of them. Nico's arms were looped around his shoulders, his legs around Will's waist. His stomach acted as a makeshift sling for the cats, who weren't bothered by the movement.

"C'mon." Will yawned. "We can't sleep on the couch."

He carried them through to their bedroom, kicking the door closed and gently setting Nico and the cats down on the bed. Nico tenderly moved the cats to the other side of the bed and clung to Will as he settled down.

"How was your day?" he mumbled into Will's chest. Will turned, enveloping Nico in his arms.

"Better now," he whispered. Perhaps, in the morning, he would bolt upright with the realisation of what he'd agreed to but, for now, he drifted off thinking about how life couldn't be better.
