"I want a dog," Will decided aloud.
It was a Tuesday afternoon and the day was lesson free. Their term at the New Rome college had a finished a couple of days ago and Nico and Will had been enjoying the moment of slowness in their otherwise busy lives.
The sun was bright outside and people were bustling around in the streets below their apartment complex carrying baskets of chocolate eggs and other treats; kids had their heads adorned with bunny ears and their mouths split into gummy smiles.
Nico glanced up from where he sat on the sofa, pausing the episode of Supernatural which he was watching. Will sat on the floor, cross legged as he absentmindedly knitted, half his attention on the screen and the other half on the yellow scarf he was making.
"Care to expand on that?" Nico asked. Will smiled to himself, needles clicking and clacking at a surprisingly fast pace.
"Sam and Dean have a dog now," he said, gesturing to the TV screen. "Dogs are cute."
"I know they're cute," Nico said, "but you can't suddenly decide to get a dog just because you see one in a series."
Will looked up at him with a blinding smile.
"Why not?"
-
As they entered the shelter, hands clasped and swinging jovially between them, Nico thought to himself how utterly mad they were. Will was bouncing with every step. His eyes reflected the blue of the sky and puffy shapes of the clouds. Nico had to look away before he got visual toothache.
"Hello," the person at the front desk said. "How may I help you?"
Their eyes landed on Nico and Will's joined hands and they brightened considerably, moving their hair to reveal a pride pin attached to their pink shirt. Will grinned back.
"We're looking to adopt a dog," he answered.
"Any specific breed or age?"
"No," Nico said. "We'll take any."
The receptionist smiled wider. "Great! Take a seat. My name's Quinn. Ask me if you need anything. Someone will be through to talk with you soon."
That someone was a blue haired lady with animated eyes and a mouth the speed of a bullet train. Will could keep up with her whilst Nico stayed quited, watching the dogs she showed them carefully.
When they came across a small, fuzzy dog, Nico tugged on Will's arm to signal him to stop. Will looked down.
"This fella's cute."
"His name is Orpheus."
Nico's face cracked into a smile. "He's perfect."
-
Later, sitting on the sofa with Orpheus curled up between them, Nico pulled Will into a short but sweet kiss.
"I'm glad we got a dog," he said.
Will smirked. "I told you it would be a good idea."
Nico laughed. "Never change, Will."
